Quentin Tarantino to Make a Western as His Next Film?

Quentin Tarantino making a Western for his next?
Quentin Tarantino making a Western for his next?
While it's still not totally clear how director Quentin Tarantino will follow up his Oscar-nominated Inglourious Basterds, it seems he might be revitalizing the Western genre. The New York Daily News spoke with Tarantino at a recent Oscar luncheon, and he revealed a few details about a new Western project.

"I'd like to do a Western. But rather than set it in Texas, have it in slavery times. With that subject that everybody is afraid to deal with. Let's shine that light on ourselves. You could do a ponderous history lesson of slaves escaping on the Underground Railroad. Or, you could make a movie that would be exciting. Do it as an adventure. A spaghetti Western that takes place during that time. And I would call it 'A Southern.'"

It isn't clear if this is something that Tarantino is currently writing, or it it's just in the idea stages right now. We'll be sure to keep you posted on any new details about this Quentin Tarantino Western (or "Southern") as soon as more information comes in.

Inglourious Basterds was released August 21st, 2009 and stars Brad Pitt, Mélanie Laurent, Christoph Waltz, Eli Roth, Michael Fassbender, Diane Kruger, Daniel Brühl, Til Schweiger. The film is directed by Quentin Tarantino.

Yes, it really does sound great! Tarantino is the ultimate perfectionist in cinema these days, his style is absolutely the most outstanding. Can't wait for his next film. Western or Southern, everything that's in his head is great ...

  6. The Narrator: The Better Man

@Insert, I know it wasn't a "genre changer" like Comrade mentioned in his list of Western movies going a different route, but I was instead trying to list overall the only good westerns out this past half decade, period. The movies noted in his comment; both of which I've seen, and are good, (save for Jonah Hex, yet to be released), are the only real good "westerns" type flicks I have seen yet these past few years. Ergo why I added Yuma to the list.

Lets face it, the days of movies like Lonesome Dove and such are damn near memory. Westerns do need a wide audience approved comeback, and this and The Lone Ranger, and maybe even Jonah Hex, can just very well do it.

Tarantino is one of the few directors out there who can still hold the title of "artist" when it comes to his movies. He takes the greatest care, and makes the best movies. I'd line up for this movie now if I could.

I think he would be great at doing a "western style" movie. I really enjoyed Sikuyaki Western Jango (a "wester style" movie Tarantino was a guest star in, for those that don't know), and would suspect that Tarantino would do even better than that movie.

Great movie, but I wouldn't count 3:10 To Yuma as a "genre changing" western. It's actually the only "true" western in recent years that comes to mind.

I would see a Southern from Tarantino in a heartbeat.
