'Prometheus' Cancels Out Guillermo Del Toro's 'At the Mountains of Madness'

Ridley Scott's sci-fi thriller has the same premise as the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation, which is why it isn't moving forward.

Director Guillermo del Toro is currently in post-production on his creature feature Pacific Rim, which is set to hit theaters July 12, 2013. It was believed that the H.P. Lovecraft adaptation At the Mountains of Madness would be his next directorial effort, but now the director reveals this project isn't happening due to the striking similarities between it and Fox's highly-anticipated sci-fi thriller Prometheus from director Ridley Scott.

"I have been interviewed about this lately and wanted to post my two cents about this:

Prometheus started filming a while ago - right at the time we were in preproduction on Pacific Rim. The title itself gave me pause - knowing that Alien was heavily influenced by Lovecraft and his novella.

This time, decades later with the budget and place Ridley Scott occupied, I assumed the greek metaphor alluded at the creation aspects of the HPL book. I believe I am right and if so, as a fan, I am delighted to see a new RS science fiction film, but this will probably mark a long pause - if not the demise - of ATMOM.

The sad part is - I have been pursuing ATMOM for over a decade now - and, well, after Hellboy II, two projects I dearly loved were not brought to fruition for me.

The good part is: One project did... And I am loving it and grateful for the blessings I have received."

He also responded to fans who replied to his thread, wondering what the connection between At the Mountains of Madness and Prometheus is.

"Same premise. Scenes that would be almost identical. Both movies seem to share identical set pieces and the exact same BIG REVELATION (twist) at the end. I won't spoil it."

At the Mountains of Madness was released in 2013. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro.

@narrator: I wholeheartedly agree with you. I'd never anticipated a sic-fi film more. I listened to the radio drama of it under some red lights late at night in a trippy room. It was creepy and awesome. It just made me think of how perfect it would've been to see GDT's take on this. He even put the Old Ones in "HellBoy 2" to give us a glimpse of what he then figured would be his next project.

I'm just irked big time by this, @slysnide. When the project still had wheels, ATMOM was my most anticipated sci-fi film and it's managed to stay at the top of that list since then. This is just disheartening for all of us fans.

@narrator: I feel ya man. If anyone was meant to make "ATMOM," it was GDT.

    F*ck F*ck F*ck F*ck F*CK!!!! SCRAP "PROMETHEUS" AND TAKE "ATMOM" INSTEAD!!!!

And no, "Alien" has no influences from Lovecraft. Dan O'Bannon wrote it as a scary version of a campy segment from "Dark Star" (1974) and planned on using HR Giger's art to design the film (which he did).

    Overall, HORRIBLE NEWS!!!!!

Happens all the time. At least he's smart enough to realize it and move on. I'm sure his next project will be just as good, and hopefully in the future he'll be able to revisit it.

Hm, that's really unfortunate. Hopefully Mr. Del Toro will still get to make it. Although... why not Hellboy 3?

I don't care if they are similar. I still want ATMOM from Del Toro, I sincerely hope and pray he gets to make that movie.
