Poltergeist Remake Picks Up Two Writers

They're here... again. According to The Hollywood Reporter, MGM has tapped the screenwriting team of Juliet Snowden and Stiles White ("Boogeymen") to write the screenplay for their Poltergeist remake.

The original 1982 film was directed by Tobe Hooper and co-written by Steven Spielberg and went on to make $122 million worldwide and spawned two sequels.

No director or cast has been announced, nor has a production schedule for the film. Snowden and White also wrote the upcoming thriller Knowing for director Alex Proyas and star Nicolas Cage, that's due out next March.

Poltergeist was released June 4th, 1982 and stars Craig T. Nelson, JoBeth Williams, Beatrice Straight, Dominique Dunne, Oliver Robins, Heather O'Rourke, Michael McManus, Virginia Kiser. The film is directed by Tobe Hooper.

Have the powers that be completely run out of original material. The original Poltergeist was a fantastic film. Why re-make a film and take a chance on ruining it? So far, most of the remakes to hit theaters have fallen seriously short of the originals. Halloween comes to mind. The original is classic. Rob Zombie's remake did nothing to improve on it. He only added more graphic violence. Sure, he added some tidbits on Michaels Myers' childhood, but that alone did not improve on the film. I see noway to improve on Poltergeist. Lock yourselves into a room and write something new and fresh. Quit rehashing classic movies that still hold up after 20+ years.

the original was definitely a masterpiece, one of hooper's few good movies, alongside the likes of 'life force' and 'texas chainsaw massacre".

this will probably be about as good as the hitcher remake, which sucked all the soul out of the original story and replaced it with woodchips and sh*tty writing.

Yet another film that a remake won't better. For older films where the special effects are now creaky, a remake would be interesting (ala Clash of the Titans), but 80's films don't need to be remade. The SFX of Poltergeist are slightly aged, but not embarrassing. And it was suitably creepy and atmospheric. So again, what will a remake bring to the table? Once again, lazy, soulless, unoriginal and blatantly greedy.

The effects in the first one are top notch. They still hold up today (the film came out in '82). I will see the remake, but out of all the remakes coming out or being talked about lately, this one upsets me the most. Poltergeist is one of my favorite movies and it will be hard for me to picture anyone other than JoBeth Williams and Heather O'Rourke playing the mother and daughter.

Well i thought the first one sucked so hopefully the remake won't be as over the top and cartoony. i know im in the minority here seeing as tons of people think this is a classic but i fail to see what exactly is so astonishing about this Amityville Horror knockoff

Do we really need a Poltergeist remake? Might as well remake Ghostbusters or Pet Cemetery while they're at it.

Dakota Fanning would be perfect as Carol Anne wouldn't she? This remake does sound good on paper, but it could easily crumble since we know remakes and some sequels don't have the spirit the originals have.
