Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest Steals A New Weekend Box Office Record
Well, that was pretty much answered with another opening day record won by Pirates on Friday with $55.5 million, according to Box Office Mojo. The Disney flick not only beat the weekend record, but absolutely triumphed it with $132 million. The sequel to the hugely successful Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightly headed movie, based on the Disneyland amusement ride. This film is bigger than the original and there's no question why fans made it the number one film.
The rest of the top ten follows the same as last week, including last week's number one Superman Returns, coming in second place with $21.9 million. The Warner super hero film took it on the chin this weekend with more than $110 million less than what Pirates made. The two and a half-week total for the film is $141 million; the film may not make the projected $150 million by next week, but there's still time.
Third place goes to The Devil Wears Prada starring Meryl Streep and Anne Hathaway; the Fox fashion flick brought in $15.6 million to take its two week total up to an extremely impressive $63.7 million. The film has already nearly doubled its $35 million production budget - a huge pleasant surprise for the studio.
Adam Sandler's comedy Click came in fourth place this week with $12 million. The film, which also stars Kate Beckinsale as Adam's wife, passed the $100 million mark for a total of $106 million for the three week total.
Disney is still making a load of money with their animated hit film, Cars. The Pixar Animation film made $10.3 million over the weekend to finish in fifth place and pass the $200 million mark; the five-week total goes to $205.5 million. After a slow growth, the family flick has gained solid amounts over the past few weeks.
Nachoooooooooo is still being screamed over theaters; the Jack Black wrestling comedy, Nacho Libre finished in sixth place with $3.3 million for the weekend. The four week total goes to $74 million, which is more than double the $35 million budget.
Warner's romantic drama, The Lake House came in seventh place. The reunion of Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves dropped in with $2.8 million for the weekend taking the total for four weeks to $45.6 million. The film is the remake of the Korean film, Siworae.
In eighth place, The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift with $2.5 million; the third installment of the racing series has brought in $57.3 million over four weeks. After going without the star of the previous movies, Paul Walker, this version stars Lucas Black - and a brief cameo from Vin Diesel.
Tyrese Gibson's urban drama, Waist Deep, rolls into ninth place with $1.8 million and a three week total of $19.1 million. Larenz Tate, The Game, and Meagan Good also star in the Bonnie and Clyde-type movie.
And finally, Vince Vaughn and Jennifer Aniston come in tenth place with their romantic comedy, The Break-Up to end up with $1.6 million. The total for the Universal film went to $114.3 over six weeks.
Next week, July 14th, Universal comes out with another comedy, "You, Me and Dupree" starring Owen Wilson, Matt Dillon, and Kate Hudson. Columbia also has a comedy of their own from Shawn and Marlon Wayans - Little Man.
There are also a few independent film opening in limited release this week including The Groomsmen, written, directed, and starring Ed Burns - and also starring Matthew Lillard, Donal Logue, John Leguizamo, Jay Mohr, and Brittany Murphy. Plus, Mini's First Time starring Thirteen's Nikki Reed, Alec Baldwin, Carrie Anne Moss, and Jeff Goldblum.
Now, there's no chance - with all due respect to all these films - that Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest finishes in first place again. I say "You, Me and Dupree" comes in second.
Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest was released July 7th, 2006 and stars Johnny Depp, Orlando Bloom, Keira Knightley, Jack Davenport, Bill Nighy, Jonathan Pryce, Lee Arenberg, Mackenzie Crook. The film is directed by Gore Verbinski.
