The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 lands Peter Weller to voice Batman
Modern Family actress Ariel Winter will voice The Dark Knight's sidekick, Robin, while Wade Williams is portraying Harvey Dent/Two-Face, and Michael McKean voices Dr. Wolper, the psychiatrist who releases The Joker from the insane asylum. David Selby has also joined the voice cast in an unknown role.
The story is set in a Gotham City where Batman has retired, and a criminal group dubbed The Mutants has taken over the city. A 55-year-old Bruce Wayne is summoned out of exile to stop The Joker, after an electromagnetic pulse ravages the city.
Jay Oliva is directing from a screenplay by Bob Goodman (Warehouse 13), with Bruce W. Timm executive producing. Here's what the executive producer had to say about this legendary property.
"Dark Knight Returns is the granddaddy of beloved comics properties that we've ever attempted (to adapt). There is definitely the imperative to get it right."
The studio is splitting up Frank Miller's four-part graphic novel into two animated movies, with The Dark Knight Returns, Part 1 arriving on Blu-ray and DVD this fall, and Part 2 slated for release in early 2013.
