Peter Weir Leaves As Director Of Shantaram
Variety reports the reason he left could have been because he and star, Johnny Depp did not see eye to eye. But, WB execs say that is not the case. Johnny stars as an Australian heroin addict who escapes a maximum-security prison, reinvents himself as a doctor in the slums of India and winds up a gun-runner and counterfeiter who fights against invading Russian troops in Afghanistan.
Warner Bros. has just begun talking to directors to replace Weir in Shantaram; they're hoping production will start by spring 2007 and shooting in India, Spain and the U.K.
