Director Peter Jackson will take a break from Middle Earth next year to shoot The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun. The filmmaker revealed during a Belgian press tour for The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey that he hopes to shoot the performance capture sequel in 2013 for a 2015 release.

We reported last October that Peter Jackson will direct this sequel after he finishes work on The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey, which at the time was only slated to be a two-part film. Now that he has a full-blown trilogy, with The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug debuting next December and The Hobbit: There and Back Again closing out the series in December 2014, it leaves one to wonder where this busy filmmaker will find time in his schedule for a follow-up to last year's The Adventures of Tintin, directed by Steven Spielberg.

We reported last April that Anthony Horowitz (Alex Rider: Operation Stormbreaker) is writing the screenplay.

The Adventures of Tintin: Prisoners of the Sun comes to theaters in 2015 and stars Andy Serkis, Jamie Bell. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

Agreed, @thedude-abides. Spielberg's installment was entertaining and visually breathtaking, but definitely messy. I honestly feel this is far more up Jackson's alley. Anyone that watches any of his interviews or production diaries knows that he's a pretty animated chap, and I feel his weird sense of humor and grandeur would work well in this animated series.

Sweet. I'd love to see Jackson's take on the sequel now that he's pretty much done with "The Hobbit" (unless he and his crew are still working on the 2nd and 3rd films). While I enjoyed the first film for what it was, I bet the sequel will be even better since Jackson is assigned to direct it. :-)

I hope with all his work on The Hobbit trilogy he doesn't get lazy with this project. This sequel needs full attention to be a hit. The first didn't exactly grab many audiences.
