While MGM and New Line want to keep Jackson's involvement in the film as broad as possible, hinting that he may take up both writing and directing responsibilities, Jackson's manager Ken Kamins told Hollywood Insider that Jackson won't be directing the films. "Peter won't be directing because he felt the fans have waited long enough for The Hobbit. It will take the better part of every day of the next four years to write, direct and produce two Hobbit films. Given his current obligations to both The Lovely Bones and Tintin, waiting for Peter, Fran (Walsh) , and Phillippa to write, direct and produce The Hobbit would require the fans wait even longer."
The site reports that directors Sam Raimi (Spider-Man), Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth), and Alfonso Cuaron (Children of Men) are still the names that come up as alternate possibilities, but no official creative decision has been made.

Death321 are you for real? I mean did you really just say that? You said "Peter Jackson didn't write The Lord of the Ring's Story . Just directed the screen adaption of the book's . Who care's who direct's this movie ! If they have the right amount of Money to back it and follow the story of the book the Hobbit it will be awsome !"
Are you serious!!!? Sam Raimi didn't create Spiderman, he just ruined the entire concept by putting his vision on screen. Tim Story didn't write Fantastic Four he just took a sh*t on both of those hack films that he released. Look at what you are writing.
A movie cannot survive without a truly talented director behind the wheel. Look at how much money was thrown into Eragon and look at what happened when they threw a first time, no talent ass clown of a director to do the job. You get one big cluster f*ck of a film that has no character development, horrible pacing and really lame story elements. And we all know how f*cking terrible Sam Raimi is with character development and Pacing (Venom anyone?.....All of Spiderman 3 anyone?, actually make that all of the Spiderman movies anyone).
Above all else, with a new director you lose all the continuity that Peter Jackson so beautifully created. And I sure as f*ck dont want to see Raimi's pet project Bruce Campbell dressed up like some dimwitted elf. His humor is not amusing at all. Or maybe he would have Bilbo do some kind of flashdance across the shire like that crap he pulled with Spiderman. F*CK RAIMI and his horrible, horrible ideas. Peter may not be the only one who can make the The Hobbit... but he is the only one who can do it the justice it deserves.
Peter for the Hobbit!
I will wait as long as necessary to make sure it is done right with Peter directing.

it doesnt release till 2010 anyway, so I would rather jackson direct it and push the release back till he's ready to release them... raimi will just rain sh*t on what jackson has built in the LOTR series

He's not directing because it would take 4 years? Maybe it's because he's still bitter about his Newline lawsuit and being too expensive for Newline to write, direct and produce...Sam Raimi will do a good job though.

It needs to be Jackson. It was the attention he paid to LOTR that made them great.

Ok Peter Jackson is a good director no question there, but he is not the only one who can direct fantasy films...so does it really matter if he doesnt hold the reigns on this one, at least he is still involved with the project[s]. Let's give another director a chance to prove themselves i say!

i rather wait till peter has the time to direct it. what is the dam hurry to make these films anyways??? why dont they just make another crappy comic book movie for the time being. if they push it too much to try and get it done they will end up messing it all up!

I can't imagine anyone directing "The Hobbit," but Peter Jackson. I don't care how long it takes for the movie to be made with him directing it; I also believe that many other people feel the same way I do. Peter Jackson you have to direct this film, you are so talented, and I guarantee that the only way this movie because a masterpiece is if you direct it, you have to. Don't let anyone one else direct it. I am even willing to wait ten more years if I have to so that you can direct it. Please, please direct "The Hobbit," it would mean so much to me, and every other person in the world. Because Peter Jackson, every single person believes that no one should direct this film, but you, you could and would make "The Hobbit" the best film ever made, and I there have been some great films. No one, except you has ever made me jump out of my seat in a movie like you have done, and feel so happy when the movie is over, and know that it will go down in history as one of the greats. I need you and the world needs you to direct "The Hobbit."

Peter Jackson is the man, but i gotta say Guillermo would make a dope Hobbit movie. I think he's the only one listed that has a style close to jackson's.

Wow, this one really sucks and you hardcore LOTR fans will not be happy at all. Heck, I'm not the biggest LOTR junkie, but this is dad news in Hollywood, The One Ring.net has just received an email from Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh that basically says he will not be directing The Hobbit nor this supposed second LOTR-based film.
New Line is currently looking for another filmmaker to bring The Hobbit and that LOTR prequel to the big screen. That's the good news. The bad news? Both films will probably suck.

I could care less if it would take more time to see the hobbit. As long as it is done right, and the only way to do that is to have Jackson to direct it.

The production has been repeatedly derailed by rights issues and Jackson's desire to remake King Kong for Universal Pictures, which soured relations between New Line and the director.
Jackson will be producing the new films, with a director yet to be appointed. No casting details are expected to emerge for quite some time
