Edward Zwick signs on to direct Pawn Sacrifice
The project is based on the true story of American chess prodigy Bobby Fischer's famous world championship match against Russia's Boris Spassky in 1972. Tobey Maguire will portray Bobby Fischer, with producers currently seeking an actor to play his Russian counterpart. We first reported on this project back in March 2010, when David Fincher was set to direct.
Steven Knight (Eastern Promises) wrote the screenplay, with Tobey Maguire and Gail Katz producing. No production schedule was released.
Edward Zwick is also attached to direct The Great Wall for Legendary Pictures, and he is writing the screenplay adaptation for American Assassin at CBS Films. It isn't known which of these projects will move forward first.
Pawn Sacrifice comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Tobey Maguire. The film is directed by Edward Zwick.

@narrator Haha.. yeah the problem is no one has an open mind to arts anymore... people like their one type of film, and watch that only... I even gave Twlight a chance... I wish people would watch films and try to appreciate their direction they set out and the things that they did that was good... LOTR is definitely one of the top films to create a visually stunning film with deep depth into story, near perfect acting, a wonderful musical score... I hate how people look and go, well this isn't my type of story... IT SUCKS.... Rip... their eyes.... out... haha
AND BELIEVE ME I WAS DEFINITELY KIDDING! I love LOTR! I just knew I could get you a little fired up! haha

Holy hell-balls, @mcleve02! I almost jumped down your throat at that comment, man. Only calming down to read the rest of your comment made me spare your internet life. Haha!
Seriously though, @bawnian-dexeus and Joker, I think that someone could consider LotR not to their taste, but any serious person couldn't consider it a "bad" movie. It's damn near impossible to say that it's flaws outweigh it's strengths. And yet, I hear people (and yes, they tend to be f*cking hipsters) talk the film down as though it was the average, cheesy, summer blockbuster, and not greatest possible adaption of one of the most legendary pieces of fantasy of all time. F*cking ass-hats, the lot of them!
*rant over*

Agreed, @mcleve02. He would have been fantastic in a Fincher directed film.

@narrator I think I would have rather seen Elijah Wood as Bobby Fischer!
Very exciting! Looking forward to this!!!

Agreed, @thedude-abides. Fincher has a knack for choosing projects with serious potential. The Social Network proved he can tackle just about any genre. That, the fact that Zwick is now helming this project, and that it was written by the writer of Eastern Promises is, well, promising.

Zwick is solid, but I'm more intrigued by the fact that Fincher was once attached to direct, which means it must be quality material to have such big name directors circling it.
