After many starts and stops, it looks like Spy Hunter is finally coming our way thanks to Universal. According to Variety, Paul W.S. Anderson is going to direct the film. It is based on a Midway videogame that featured the transforming super car called the Interceptor.

Mortal Kombat, Event Horizon, Soldier, and Resident Evil are just a few of the films Anderson has worked on in the past. Spy Hunter could very well be another cult classic for the Auteur.

Anderson plans on writing the script with the help of another unspecified screenwriter. The project has already passed through the hands of such talents folks as Michael Brandt, Derek Haas, Zak Penn and Stuart Beattie. John Woo was originally attached to direct the film back in 2004, but that plan didn't pan out the way it was supposed to.

Dwayne The Rock Johnson has been attached to play the Spy Hunter, who is never actually seen in the video game, for a long while. It is not known at this time if he will still play the role, or if it will be recast. Dwayne has already gotten behind the wheel of the Interceptor once before, back when he played the Spy Hunter role in 2006's Midway videogame Spy Hunter: Nowhere to Run. It was supposed to coincide with the release of the theatrical film, but when production hit a snag, they were forced to release the game to recoup some of the costs.

Paul W.S. Anderson is currently prepping the remake Death Race, which should hit theaters sometime in 2008. There is no word on when Spy Hunter will go before the cameras.

Spy Hunter comes to theaters in 2012.
