Paul Newman Has Passed Away

Paul Newman
Paul Newman
Paul Newman, famous for his roles in Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, Cool Hand Luke as well as a massive portfolio of other projects including Cars and Road To Perdition, died today at his long-time home in Westport, Connecticut, of cancer.

As recently as early August, Newman had been given only weeks to live as he finished a run of chemo-therapy. At that time, Newman decided to return to his home where he would remain with his family until his death. "Paul didn't want to die in the hospital", a source recently told online publication Daily Mail.

Newman is survived by the actress Joanne Woodward, his wife since 1958 and two daughters from his first marriage to Jackie Witte.

In addition to his film career, during which he earned 10 Oscar nominations (winning best actor for The Color of Money in 1986), he was a well-known race driver and race team owner and the founder of Newman's Own, a company which Newman launched single-handedly that became a mulit-million dollar a year food company and major benefactor to charities around the world, donating over $250 million.

According to a statement issued by the Newman's Own Foundation: "Paul Newman's craft was acting. His passion was racing. His love was his family and friends. And his heart and soul were dedicated to helping make the world a better place for all."

"In Paul's words: "I wanted to acknowledge luck; the chance and benevolence of it in my life, and the brutality of it in the lives of others, who might not be allowed the good fortune of a lifetime to correct it."

Paul Newman will be missed by all. He was a true legend, who's skill, work ethic, attitude and outlook are rare, indeed.

His life did indeed extend beyond acting. He will truly be missed.

And to think I saw part of a story on his life on CBS' "Sunday Morning" a few hours ago, and I jokingly said: "What? He dead or something?" since there was no other reason for it to be on. I regret that statement. This is truly a big loss.

    RIP Paul. :(

Wow...That is bad news. Paul Newman was a living legend; great actor & movie star, philanthropist, race car enthusiast and great person. He is the definition of a class act.

He was fantastic in "Cool Hand Luke," "The Verdict" and "The Color of Money." Those are the essential Paul Newman movies..."Nobody's Fool" was great too.

R.I.P. Mr. Newman. Your legacy is prodigious.

Yet another great actor departs us for the afterlife. My three favourite Paul Newman movies:
    1. Road to Perdition
    2. Slapshot
    3. The Hudsucker Proxy
I've never seen Butch Cassidy and Sundance Kid but i definitely will now.
Also a huge fan of his pasta sauces and salad dressings - he definitely manufactured quality products! R.I.P.
