Paul Catling Developing Tomo Feature Based on His Short Film
The film won both the Short Film Award at Sundance Film Festival and the Grand Jury Prize at the Boston Independent Film Festival in 2004. It features an angry, sometime drunken astronaut who is marooned on bleak icy planet with no one but a mischievous cyborg called TOMO as sole companion.
The brilliantly crafted film mixes live action with CGI. The CG character, TOMO ("companion" in Japanese) is driven by motion capture data recorded at Artem Digital to match moves filmed on location in Iceland.
The robot TOMO is seen full screen, often directly interacting with the human character. The film demonstrates the ability of motion capture to imbue life into CG characters.
