Pascal Laugier to Direct Hellraiser Remake

Pascal Laugier (director of the controversial horror film Martyrs), is in final negotiations to write and direct Dimension's re-imagining of Clive Barker Presents: Hellraiser, one of Clive Barker's best-loved creations.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the original Hellraiser was released in 1987 and told the story of an unfaithful wife who attempts to assist her dead lover in his escape from hell. The movie introduced viewers to a race of demons called Cenobites, most notably one nicknamed Pinhead -- who became one of the most enduring horror characters of the decade -- who was summoned using an antique puzzle box.

Dimension has been hoping to relaunch the franchise for the past couple of years, first hiring Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo to write and direct a remake then tapping Marcus Dunstan and Patrick Melton to write a new draft.

"This is a dream project for me," Laugier said. "I know Clive Barker's work very well, and I would never betray what he has done. Fans are expecting a definitive 'Hellraiser,' and I don't want to take that away from them."

Martyrs has been dividing audiences since appearing at the Festival de Cannes because of its unrelenting violent nature. The movie was hit with a 18+ rating -- a rarity in France and an equivalent of NC-17 in the U.S. -- sparking a protest by the country's Society of Film Directors.

No production date has been set.

Hellraiser comes to theaters in 2013. The film is directed by Patrick Lussier.

  5. Err

i do agree that the original hellraiser is a masterpiece and doesnt need to be remade, but i gave up complaining about remakes a long time ago.

at this point i just cross my fingers and hope the remake isnt an insult to the original. case in point-- the tcm remake, the day of the dead remake (travesty!) or the hitcher remake, all of which sucked the soul out of the originals.

and razor glove i thought the hills have eyes remake was decent, although the sequal was obviously poop smeared on a cracker.

I don't think it's all that bad an idea. There have been a few remakes that were actually pretty damn good because you knew the filmmakers would do a justice, case in point: Rob Zombie's Halloween or The Texas chainsaw Massacre. While, a lot of them were terrible (The Hills Have Eyes, When a Stranger Calls, some of Psycho, etc.), it doesn't mean it'll be totally awful. We'll just have to see where the marketing campaign takes us...

Note to all Producers and Directors....

When you make a film now, just spend an extra 6-12 months making the re-make of it. F*cking lame!!

It's about time...at least Dimension isn't rushing this project, instead, taking great care of this remake. The first Hellraiser is a classic horror movie that stands the test of time...Having said that, I'm all for a modern effects update as is Clive Barker:

"I'm excited about it - actually it'll be kinda cool to revisit it once and see if there are things we can do to it which will make it significantly better.

I am very happy at the idea of having some more money for the cool stuff - I don't know how much more money, but it's got to be more than the $900,000 that we had the first time!"

am piss off about this , cuz the first time I eard about the remake was in a Clive barker interview , i said that he wasnt gonna direct it but that he was gonna re-write it , and that he kinda hype about it since he could write it with a bigger budget in head

He's a typical remake director. Not much of movies in his filmography. The first two hellraisers were great. They should remake the third hellraiser and go from there. This f*cking remake is going to be more about adding up to date special effects in this stolen movie to make hell and the cenobites more interesting, which won't happen. It never does in remakes. the past should stay in the past. After seeing the pg-13 remake of Prom Night, i wouldn't be surprised if this f*cking foreign idiot director tries the same thing.

  16. Err

well i looked up this 'pascal laugier" and apparently he is nothing special. never the less there's never been a hellraiser movie, or a movie based on a clive barker work that i refused to watch so of course i will see this eventually.

and f*ck doug bradley, of course he was awesome as pinhead but if youre going to reboot a 20 year old franchise you dont stick with the same old ingrediants. you start fresh with all new players.

    duh.
