Pacificor Buys Terminator Rights

Terminator goes to Pacificor
Terminator goes to Pacificor
Deadline Hollywood is reporting that Santa Barbara-based hedge fund Pacificor has purchased the rights to the Terminator franchise from the Halcyon Holding Corp. for $29.5 million. Interestingly, this is the same Pacificor whom Halcyon accused in a lawsuit of extortion, bribery, and fraud and demanded $30M in damages.

Halcyon will receive $5 million for every Terminator movie made from now on, as well as retains the rich revenue streams from the movies Terminator 3 and 4. An arrangement also was made that the sale now wipes out the debt Halcyon owed to Pacificor and all the other creditors.

Back on May 9, 2007, rights to the Terminator series passed from producers Andy Vajna and Mario Kassar to the privately funded Halcyon Co. (formed by entrepreneurs Victor Kubicek and Derek Anderson) for a reported $30 million. It was Pacificor that lent Halcyon the money to conclude the deal.

The Terminator was released October 26th, 1984 and stars Arnold Schwarzenegger, Michael Biehn, Linda Hamilton, Paul Winfield, Lance Henriksen, Bess Motta, Earl Boen, Rick Rossovich. The film is directed by James Cameron.

@Emmytt I just found out that McG isn't contracted for 5 and 6 now, his contract was with Halcyon and the judge ordered that Pacificor does not have to honor it. So.. he will direct it if they choose him to. With Pacificor stopping Terminator 3000 animated movie, it's probably safe to say they are pursuing another movie. When is the key word, however. There's been no news. Hopefully something will turn up soon.

Wow I must have completely missed this news back in February. I was following the auction but never knew the outcome, even though I was checking MW all the time. Last thing I remember was that LionsGate and Sony were big contenders. Hmmm. Well this makes sense AND doesn't. I mean think about it: Pacificor lends Halcyon the money to make T4... which Halcyon does not pay back like a-holes and causes them to go into debt and declare bankruptcy. Then there are lots of contenders to buy the Terminator franchise but Halcyon ultimately sells it to the company who let them make T4 in the first place. Coincidence? No. And how does that "wipe out the debt that Halcyon owed to Pacificor"? Pacificor was out that money they loaned to Halcyon so they could make that movie, now they had to turn around and put up MORE money just to get the franchise away from them. If anything, this would DOUBLE the debt Halcyon owes Pacificor. $30M to buy Terminator franchise off Halcyon? Halcyon already owes them, they should have just gave it to them for one dollar like Cameron did.

I respect Lucas but that's it. Sure he did Star Wars but that's all I'm grateful for, I just want him to accept that there are other directors who would love to tell their own tale.

er...did you just use GEORGE LUCAS as a GOOD DIRECTOR??? i don't count 1 HIT WONDERS as good directors. George is certainly and OVERRATED PRODUCER at best! He directed American Graffitti and THX1138 and the original STARWARS.

The rest were more as 'executive producer' than director, and that's what he's good at. But i do NOT RESPECT HIM as a director! But that's just me....

Scorese did NOT write Raging Bull, only directed & produced. Agreed that he is a good 'creator'. He did write Casino & Goodfellas.

i agree there are good directors that CAN create their own ideas...but the BEST directors can direct ANYTHING...(just like a good salesman can sell anything!)
It's the ability to DETACH from your own idea's and present someone else's makes you a good director.

MARC FOSTER a white boy from Germany was able to personify the coming of age painful story in Kabul in KITERUNNER (although this will bite me in the ass cause i hated QUANTUM)

MIRA NAIR - a educated woman raised in Delhi india, was focusing on indian life (NAMESAKE, SALAAM BOMBAY, KARMA SUTRA), but was able to present storys out of her element so well in VANITY FAIR,(british society) & PEREZ FAMILY (latino culture).

ANG LEE - a meek Taiwanese director initially recognized for his chinese films WEDDING BANQUET, EAT DRINK MAN WOMAN, then took on project away from 'home' Jane Austin's SENSE & SENSIBILITY, ICE STORM, my fav HULK & BROKE BACK MOUNTAIN.

these are all people who can step away from what's close to their heart and STILL do wonders with others work. i respect a director who can do that.

Erm...Goodfellas is fiction...Raging Bull is actually a biopic, yes. Back on point, the best directors create their source material too, like Lucas & Speilberg.

Erm....Goodfellas and Raging Bull were biopics. Hardly original source material.

Being a good Director AND Creator of source material are NOT mutually exclusive!

Most can do one or the other...a few can do both> George Lucas/Star Wars...Steven Speilberg/ET/Close Encounters of the Third Kind...Lucas/Speilberg/Indiana Jones trilogy...Martin Scorsesse/Goodfellas & Raging Bull...which underscores my previous point - James Cameron is a great director, just not a progenitor of source material itself...a Technical innovator yes. However, technology gets obselete relatively quickly, the story itself, if actually very good/original, etches into pervading history.

On the title topic, i don't think this is good. It would have been better if a studio purchased the rights, they would have more concern for characters and story.
Pacificor will probably auction off the production to the highest bidder, rather than who 'understands' the story.

as for Cameron, he's not a creator, and he shouldn't be...he's a good director! That's what good directors do, they can see the potential in 'someone else's' writing. On the same flip side this is why some writers make BAD directors! (GOYER)

A good director can get 'into' ANY material that he didn't necessarily create! It gets messy when they try to direct/write/produce/act all in one. Especially when they cannot seperate themselves from their writing. M.Night Shymalan learnt that lesson and hence going the way of AIRBENDER!

A good director will have a filmography list of films that are diverse from each project. I feel the best example of a detached director of VAST diversity is Ang Lee.

There is nothing wrong with Salvation except for Bale, he just was mad all the time. Me thinks that he's got anger issues.
Personally I like McG, but it doesn't matter if he comes back or not. I still think that Cameron should at least come back just to do one more film just to tell a single story within the new trilogy.

That's funny, because I do remember that McG did go to Cameron for pointers on the Terminator franchise...incidentally, counter to what most perceive, Cameron did not create the Terminator franchise. Sci-fi author Harlan Ellison sued James Cameron for ripping off his premise from two episodes of the TV show The Outer Limits, Cameron quickly settled out of court..Ellison receives a credit now during the end credits for Terminator1...the point being that Cameron is a great director, but, not exactly the creator of any decent source material...Avatar is, as most know, is just Pocohontas and/or Fern Gully with snazzy effects that have snowed over the masses.
