Legendary Pictures moves forward on Pacific Rim 2
Legendary Pictures has hired screenwriter Travis Beacham to pen Pacific Rim 2, a follow-up to director Guillermo del Toro's upcoming Pacific Rim.

Travis Beacham wrote the original screenplay for Pacific Rim, which won't be in theaters until July of this coming year. Despite the release being more than six months away, Legendary Pictures is already prepping the sequel.

Pacific Rim and its sequel will follow a defense force consisting of giant robots known as Jaegers and the pilots that man them. They are pitted against giant Kaiju monsters intent on destroying the entire planet. Guillermo del Toro is planning to collaborate with Travis Beacham on the sequel's screenplay.

It is not known at this time if Guillermo del Toro will return to direct, or if he will hand the reins over to someone else. The director is currently commited to helming Crimson Peak for Universal Pictures, which begins shooting in January of 2014.

Pacific Rim 2 comes to theaters in 2016.

Hopefully GDT won't return. Granted he's great with designing original monsters, he needs to get away from this 'Godzilla' genre and get back to things like "HB3" and "Pan's Labyrinth." I mean at least "HB3" has a guaranteed audience who wants it badly, and with the production hell on "The Hobbit," he hasn't gotten time to work on a good film for a really long time. I'm still miffed that they canned "ATMOM." It would've been far better than "Prometheus"--making the reference since they canned it due to story similarities. And I still wish he'd directed "The Hobbit." As much as I love PJ's style, GDT would've been perfect for that creature heavy tale. Especially since it features a vast array of new creatures that weren't featured in "LOTR." At least some if not most of his designs will make it into the film. And as such, we may be seeing some interviews with GDT on the various "Hobbit" dvds/blurays.

Why? This is why so many movie fans, no the casual watcher, but fans who come to sites like this and talk movies get irritated at movie studios. Remakes, Reboots, and sequels to movies that have not even been released yet put in pre-production. It's like they want to put a bucket out in front of the theater like the salvation army asking for more money after you already given them 10 bucks or so.

I'm excited about this film, but I think this is a bad decision. There's no guarantee that it will be a good film or will make a ton of money at the box office. When your introducing a new film like Pacific Rim you should wait and see how it does in the theater first.

Can't stand when studios due this. Rather than show me they have faith, I feel they see a new cash grab on their hands.
