Pacific Rim Monsters to Be Huge and Real Says Idris Elba

Idris Elba has been out and about promoting his presence in the upcoming sequel Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance, and while doing so, he managed to slip in a few encouraging words about his next project, Guillermo del Toro's Pacific Rim.

The actor claims that the monsters in the film are quite huge, and while a lot of CGI is being used, true to Guillermo del Toro's form, these giant robots and outer space creatures will be created with practical effects as well.

Here is what Idris Elba had to say about Pacific Rim, trying not to compare it to Godzilla.

"Godzilla would throw out the wrong sort of image, I think. We are talking about some big MF-ers. There's a lot of actuality in this one because he's created huge sets. I mean, we've taken over four sets in Pinewood in Toronto and built a lot of the stuff that you might see. Yes, there is huge CGI I'm sure, but we built a lot of stuff too.

In other Pacific Rim news, Guillermo del Toro has hooked up with Striker Entertainment to create toys, games, apparel, and other merchandise tied into the film. Which means we will definitely be getting a Charlie Day doll.

Russell Binder, president of Striker Entertainment, had this to say.

"The ingredients of Guillermo del Toro, Legendary Pictures, and gripping characters, creatures and an epic storyline make for a powerful consumer products program that will be well received and endure well beyond the theatrical window.

Pacific Rim comes to theaters July 12th, 2013 and stars Idris Elba, Charlie Hunnam, Ron Perlman, Charlie Day, Clifton Collins Jr., Max Martini, Robert Maillet, Rinko Kikuchi. The film is directed by Guillermo del Toro.

@brady1138 - Ok, Luxolll ....this is an argument you need to let go because you absolutely cannot win it. Guillermo Del Toro has had at least 3 films gross over $100 million, which by ANY standards is a "commercial success".
I think you need to understand what a "big break" actually is by definition before arguing this further. A big break is when a director makes a film (any film....a feature length, short, animated, etc) that garners enough attention to get that person recognized by studios, execs and audiences.....that will ensure that person a job in the industry for years to come, as well as ensuring that person a great career of making the kinds of films that person wants to make.

Guillermo Del Toro has already had a fantastic career.....by ANY standards. The guy has made several blockbusters (Yes, Blade II, Hellboy and Hellboy 2 were ALL summer blockbusters) that he really wanted to make.

Plus, if a director has a fanboy following of any size, let alone a HUGE one like Guillermo has, then that person has officially "made it" big in the industry.

What you are comparing his career to are the handful of directors who have films amongst the highest grossing in the world....which is completely unfair.
I think I understand what you are trying to say.....but how you worded it is completely wrong.

.....and just so you are aware, Guillermo *willingly* dropped out of The Hobbit....he wasn't fired or "let go". He knew that people wanted to see Peter Jackson's version (which he is absolutely right) and gladly stepped aside to let that happen. Point being, he had the job locked in and if he hadn't already "made it big" then he never would have got that job to begin with.

If you dont get what I am saying at this point.....then lets just agree to disagree.

@k-man He has done plenty of great films with plenty of well-deserved accolades, but, like you said, he was ORIGINALLY going to direct The Hobbit, which would have been his first major blockbuster. Del Toro is not the most commercially successful director and does not have a major money-making blockbuster to his credit, but I'm saying that Pacific Rim could do just that. @k-man

    @brady1138 - Del Toro's "big break"????

Ummm, what? Del Toro is one of Hollywood's big time directors/writers, the Go-To guy for monster films, an academy award winner, 4 time Saturn award winner AND the director of several summer blockbusters, like Blade II & Hellboy....not to mention the guy who was originally going to direct The Hobbit in place of Peter Jackson!

In what way is he only now getting his "big break"??? That came in 1993 with Cronos, you goof.

Anyways, this film is going to be friggin amazing!!
