Mila Kunis will play the Wicked Witch of the West in Oz: The Great and Powerful
Director Sam Raimi has cast actress Mila Kunis as Theodorah a.k.a. The Wicked Witch of the West in Oz: The Great and Powerful. Earlier this month we reported that James Franco was circling the role of Oz. Now it is confirmed that he will star in this fantasy adventure as well.

Oz: The Great and Powerful tells the origin story of Oz (James Franco) and Glinda, the Good Witch of the North, Evanorah, the Wicked Witch of the East, and her sister, Theodorah, the Wicked Witch of the West (Mila Kunis).

Mila Kunis reportedly left the live-action adaptation of Akira to star in Oz: The Great and Powerful. The actress recently met with director Sam Raimi and James Franco, who both agreed she would be perfect for the part. It was Mila Kunis' commitment to the project that lead James Franco to come aboard.

Sam Raimi will direct from a screenplay by David Lindsay-Abaire. Shooting will begin this June at Walt Disney Studios.

Oz: The Great and Powerful comes to theaters March 8th, 2013 and stars James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz, Michelle Williams, Abigail Spencer, Zach Braff, Joey King. The film is directed by Sam Raimi.

Kunis as the Wicked Witch of the West?! NO, I don't think so! Is Ashton Kutchie going to play the Scarecrow?! Franco will be ok in it.

Both actors had a great year in 2010 being prasied with 127 Hours and Black Swan, but I still don't care to see an Oz movie even with these people in here. While both actors are making a name for themselves in hollywood grabbing more serious roles, I'm afraid this project could only set them back. In fact, James Franco's cameo in The Green Hornet has already set him back to me.

I do want to add that I'm happy for Mila Kunis. Of all the people from That 70's Show, she was one of the cast I really doubted would go anywhere with her career after that show, and she's managing to get some good roles. James Franco is a given, his career is blooming as it should, but I find it more impressive how Kunis has flourished so well.

Does anyone remember Return to OZ, produced by Lucas and Directed by Sound and Editing Master Walter Murch. Based on one of the Baum books this bombed. Even tho its a prequel audiences will compare it to the original which is suicide. Best bet is Wicked as that already has a fan based and would be more accepted as seen by many on Broadway. Downey smelled a stinker and left. LOL, and Raimi and cast are all wrong. Also glad Burton is near this this. He already done damage to my child with Apes, Chocolate Factory and Alice 3D. All vision and no substance. So there...lol

i still have to say this is one film that should not be remade, rebooted, sequeled or even side viewed, is it literally in my opinion the only film that has really stood the test of time when it come to being as old as it it, i will remain open minded but i honestly think old timers along with us in are early 20's mid 30's and even the new generation will agree once you watch the original it is a film that is truly one of a kind, their was magic caught on film and that rarely if ever happens, but i will watch and see like most and wait to really base my opinion on that, but is she turns out to be a hot witch im turning myself into a warlock, lol

  13. The Narrator: The Better Man

@ejk1, there's plenty of reasons to fear for Akira. Normally, I wouldn't mind the location/ethnicity change, but New-Tokyo was just so iconic and fitting, because Tokyo's so vibrant, rampant and neon like, whereas Chicago is the complete opposite. So that has me concerned, sure. However, I don't mind the actors they've been chasing for the role of Kaneda, and I feel like the people behind the film want to do the right thing by fans. Secondly ,while a lot can get "lost in translation", that wouldn't be such a bad thing, because Akira really wasn't plot driven. It was visually engaging, and morally ambitious, but the story really wasn't there. It was just once huge set piece and amazing scene to the next, and I wouldn't mind in the least if they thickened up the plot and actually went somewhere.

Anything with Kunis and Franco is acceptable for me, including this prequel.
@narrator You should be worried about Akira, simply because we have no idea what will get lost in translation, so to speak. A caucasian actor playing a Japanese character is weird, and if they change the name of the character, then it won't feel like Akira, just a knockoff.

Lol these two are dating in real life......
But anyways-I do not see them fitting the roles at all. Franco, I can give him at least a shot at it, but Kunis? No.

Like Narrator said... it's not a remake. Take an extra second to read what it is you are posting about. As for Raimi..he makes more good movies than bad ones. The style is one not everyone may like,. ie EvilDead series, DragMeToHell I can understand why people may not enjoy his work, but I think this project fits what this guy can do best. And after hearing Downy try to talk sh*t about Ricky Gervais at the awards, I lost much respect for the guy and I'm glad he's out.

Eh, I dunno about this... I love Franco and Kunis, and Raimi, when he's good, he's great, but it seemed like Downey Jr. was destined for this, and now. I dunno. I'll try to stay optimistic, and wait for that trailer down the road.

  21. The Narrator: The Better Man

    P.S. It's not a remake. It's a side view.

But yeah, this movie doesn't look like it's gonna win the crowds. Downey Jr. Was the main draw for most people interested, as he's charismatic and far fetched enough to draw people in. Franco, despite his acting abilities, doesn't have the same appeal. They have a really hot cast and crew for people who really weren't all that attractive in the original. Lol.
