Spike Lee's Oldboy remake is dark and gritty, according to Sharlto Copley
Sharlto Copley was down in San Diego a few weeks ago to promote director Neill Blomkamp's Elysium at Comic-Con. The actor also spoke about his role in Spike Lee's Oldboy remake, which is about to go into production very soon.

Here's what the actor had to say, revealing that they are not watering down the dark, gritty tone from Chan-wook Park's original Oldboy.

"They've been very true to the spirit of it. It's dark, it's gritty. They're not sort of softening it, which to me was important. And I'm very excited about that movie. I'm very excited about working with Spike and with Josh (Brolin). I think it's going to be a film that is really worth redoing and make that idea that is such an unbelievable story accessible to maybe more people than it was originally."

We reported back in May that Sharlto Copley had signed on as the primary villain in this reboot. Spike Lee is directing from a screenplay by Mark Protosevich.

Oldboy comes to theaters October 11th, 2013 and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, Lance Reddick, Michael Imperioli, James Ransone, Richard Portnow. The film is directed by Spike Lee.

@sbrio26 Their careers will continue after this, but I don't expect much. About the only thing I am expecting out of Lee is some kind of race statement. He never fails in that regard...

lol dan... That's exactly how I felt when I heard it was Spike Lee too. I HATE him as the choice for this but the casting is pretty good and despite myself i'm interested.

But really almost any other director with an ounce of edge and REAL creativity would have been better. This is like hiring Sofia Coppola to direct the next Transformers! Disaster

@dan1 very good point although this seems to be a little differentfrom what Lee would nomally do. The original is really for a niche audience anyway but still having Spike Lee do this remake has me worried. of course I will reserve judgement until i see something solid.

The original is such a clasic and really put Park on my radar. I would be interested in a remake but with Spke Lee behind the camera ou just never know what your gonna get. The man is hit or miss at best.

@narrator It's like a contradiction n sh*t. Since when have people used the words 'Spike Lee' and 'accessible' in the same sentence?

Funny how directors seem to affect me on whether a film should be remade or not. I stood behind TGWTDT remake, for the reasons mentioned above: making a studio money and making the fantastic plot accessible for a wider audience. However, making Oldboy mainstream, with Spike Lee at the helm? Heh, good one. Still, I like Copley and the rest of the cast, so I hope it's at least good, because I'll still watch it.
