Josh Brolin may star in the Oldboy remake
No formal offers have been made to Josh Brolin yet, although it seems he is at the top of their list. Mark Protosevich is writing the screenplay and there are some new details on the story of this remake.
Mark Protosevich is reportedly using both the original Japanese book and the Oldboy movie as reference for the remake, although the movie will have more of an influence than the novel. It is also said that approximately 20% of the remake is brand new material invented by Mark Protosevich. Here's an article excerpt about what to expect from this new version of Oldboy.
"Just as Chan-wook Park took a central concept from the Japanese manga while radically re-envisioning parts to create something new, the goal here is not to create a slavish shot-for-shot remake but to take elements of the Park film combined with elements of the manga and completely re-envision and re-contextualize those to create a specifically American story around the same concepts and themes. Time will tell what that actually looks like on screen."
Nothing has been confirmed yet regarding the Oldboy remake story or Josh Brolin's potential involvement yet.
Oldboy comes to theaters in 2013 and stars Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley. The film is directed by Spike Lee.

If he does this, it may very well be a step-down to his career.

Josh Brolin is a great actor but this whole Oldboy remake is a bad idea.

@slysnide I don't think he cast him. It's prob as @ejk1 says, Lee isn't getting a say on who's cast. Else it definitely would have been Denzel Washington :P

OMG! Alert the presses! Spike Lee cast a white guy in the lead role following an opressed dude!

@narrator You know what's funny? I was going to speculate on whether or not Lee would stay on board. Oh well. I'm having a lazy day. Kudos to you for bringing up the "will Lee stay?" angle. As far as race, I think everyone thought Lee would choose a man of color (black, asian, latino). Not presumptuous at all, just coming to a logical conclusion based on Lee's track record.

The Narrator: The Better Man
Lol. This may sound over-presumptuous of me, which may in turn sound like racism (which it isn't, and I'm not), but I thought Lee would definitely cast a black man in the lead role. Hmm? @ejk1's theory sounds more and more plausible to me, which Lee may dislike, causing him to quit the project. One can only hope.

@ejk1 That could be. I don't remember Lee ever working with anyone the likes of Brolin.

This brings up an interesting thought in my head. Is Spike Lee casting the film, or Mandate? It seems like Mandate isn't letting Spike have his way here.

Thumbs upping just because I like Brolin; not because I like him for this.

Haha. Title should read, "Oldboy remake wants a remake." LMAO!! In all seriousness, I love Josh Brolin. He plays a great douche bag, but I don't really see him as the right choice for this movie. One positive from all of this, it's not going to be the "hard knock" version of Oldboy -- at least judging by this news.
