Martha Marcy May Marlene star Elizabeth Olsen has been offered the female lead role in director Spike Lee's Oldboy remake for Mandate Pictures. It isn't known yet if the young actress will accept the part or not.

Back in September, we reported that Rooney Mara (The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo) was a top contender for the role, although she eventually passed on the project, as did Mia Wasikowska. Josh Brolin is set to star in the remake, although the production has had difficulty securing an actor to portray the villain. Actors such as Christian Bale, Colin Firth, and Clive Owen have all turned down the role.

Spike Lee is directing Oldboy from a script by Mark Protosevich (Thor). No production schedule has been released for the remake yet.

Oldboy comes to theaters October 11th, 2013 and stars Samuel L. Jackson, Josh Brolin, Elizabeth Olsen, Sharlto Copley, Lance Reddick, Michael Imperioli, James Ransone, Richard Portnow. The film is directed by Spike Lee.

Put Olsen in any movie and it instantly becomes more worth watching.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Thanks. I don't think it'll detract from the film itself. The movie really isn't about the twist; it's about the revenge.

@thedude-abides -- Really? Kudos to you! Well, that's good to know. I know what the twist is, so I was just wondering if I would wind up enjoying it even though I found such knowledge to be a setback.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Nah. I put it together about midway through, though.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx If I was grading it compared to other foreign movies, I'd give it a 4/4, but if I was grading it compared to American movies, I'd probably give it a 3.5/4

@thedude-abides -- Yeah, I gotta get caught up with A LOT of movies. I think I'll get the chance to do exactly that with Blockbuster: Total Access and Netflix. I would've been slightly interested if Rooney Mara was in it, but that's not going to happen.

What would you rate the original?

@thedude-abides -- I heard the original was amazing, and I'm already unsettled with the news of an "American version", but that was a tame sort compared to the thought of that.

    Thanks for the reminder. ;)

I like the choice, but it's gonna be weird seein' her and Brolin bang it out. Yuck.
