The studio has already laid off pre-production staff members, with the start of production postponed for 10 weeks. Paramount has moved the release date up from December 25, 2013 to May 16, 2014.
The screenplay by André Nemec and Josh Appelbaum is said to be the primary reason for the production shut down. It isn't known if Paramount is seeking out new writers. Jonathan Liebesman is directing, with Michael Bay producing through his Platinum Dunes production company.
There has been no shortage of controversy surrounding this project. Back in March, Michael Bay revealed a new "alien origin" for these popular characters, which set off a fanboy firestorm. Fans have also responded negatively to the title itself, after it was confirmed that they shortened it from the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles.
This is the third major production that Paramount has delayed in the past few months. We reported last month that G.I. Joe Retaliation was bumped nine months from June 29, 2012 to March 29, 2013 to be converted into 3D. We also reported in March that World War Z was pushed into the summer of 2013, to accommodate extensive reshoots.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles comes to theaters August 8th, 2014 and stars Megan Fox, William Fichtner, Will Arnett, Alan Ritchson, Jeremy Howard, Noel Fisher, Pete Ploszek, Danny Woodburn. The film is directed by Jonathan Liebesman.
