New Pirates of the Carribbean: On Stranger Tides Details

We reported last month that the next film adventure with Jack Sparrow would be entitled Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, and it was noted the similarities between a 1987 book dubbed On Stranger Tides by Tim Powers. It turns out that wasn't a coincidence. The Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex blog recently spoke with Powers who revealed that his novel was indeed optioned almost three years ago and will serve as a basis for Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides. Here's an excerpt from the article about how his book will translate to film.

I've watched all the movies several times, of course, and I think the clear thing they would use is the trip to the Fountain of Youth," Powers said. "My main character doesn't overlap with Jack Sparrow at all [in personality or circumstance]; they're totally different characters. I suppose they might overlap the Geoffrey Rush character Barbossa and Blackbeard. The only thing I feel certain they will hold on to is the Fountain of Youth since they telegraphed that at the end of the last movie."

"We wanted to do a story about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth, and Tim Powers wrote a book about Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth... it just turns out that to do that story you would need that book. It's a brilliant and Tim Powers is an amazing writer - and it's a great title. It allows us to draw material from that universe and his expertise."

The question remains, was it based on it or not?

"I don't know if its proper to say it's based on it but there are enough common elements to think that the book had to be optioned to us to reasonably proceed along that story line."

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides will set sail in theaters in July 2011.

Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides was released May 20th, 2011 and stars Johnny Depp, Penélope Cruz, Geoffrey Rush, Ian McShane, Kevin McNally, Sam Claflin, Astrid Berges-Frisbey, Stephen Graham. The film is directed by Rob Marshall.

I heavily enjoyed Kiera Knightley in these films. She could hold her own and she was mmm mmm mmm fine! I don't quite remember what was up with Orlando Bloom's character betraying her in the end of the last film (can't remember), but for POTC4 we don't need the core three actors to return if it is simply a story of Blackbeard and his quest for the Fountain of Youth. Just show Blackbeard and his crew and who they come across then. Simple. Sounds like a good movie, too.

We don't need Bloom and Knightley. People want Depp, he got an oscar nod for playing keith richards. Let's introduce some new pirates from pirate lore. Black beard is a good start. I don't see a problem with this being the last one. I know at some point you gotta start beating the dead horse. Of course, that all depends on how this movie does at the bow office.

Maybe since this will be the last, Bloom and Knightly might commit to this one last film. It's possible. I'd like to see Bloom get off of the damn Flying Dutchman, and actually go hunt for non-cursed treasure with Sparrow!
No more fantasy crap. I liked the skeletons, because it was linked to the ride, (when you see the skeleton at the helm steering the run aground ship) but the sea creatures just didn't do it for me.

So this is the last one. Another original franchise ruined! I love how when enough money is in the pot, how the execs start a pissing contest, but only end up pissing in the punch instead. Say goodbye to 5 & 6. Bunch of money grubbing *ssholes!

still can't wait to see this! still waiting to hear from bloom and knightly, but both reportedly said "no" to being in a fourth film last time i saw them interviewed - so we'll see. pirates would be weird w/out the three of them together again.

It does seem odd but as long as it is a good ending that makes sense i guess it wouldnt matter how many films there are in the franchise
