New Line Picks Nicole Blonsky As Hairspray's Tracy Turnblad

New Line has announced Nicole Blonsky, a 17-year-old New Yorker, to star as Tracy Turnblad in the Hairspray remake.

Blonsky won the role following a nationwide search; she got the call while working her shift at Coldstone Creamery in Great Neck, NY, says Variety. The role of Tracy Turnblad was made most famous by Ricki Lake in the original 1988 flick directed by Baltimore's John Waters.

Hairspray stars John Travolta, Queen Latifah and Amanda Bynes in the film adaptation of the Broadway musical; Brittany Snow is in negotiations for the Amber role.

Adam Shankman is directing and choreographing the film that will begin filming in September; it's set for a summer 2007 release.

Hairspray was released July 20th, 2007 and stars John Travolta, Michelle Pfeiffer, Christopher Walken, Amanda Bynes, James Marsden, Queen Latifah, Brittany Snow, Zac Efron. The film is directed by Adam Shankman.
