Webb, who has options on two sequels, will now tackle a James Vanderbilt script that sees a Spider-Man movie that will look and feel very different from the big movies that went before it.
The plan for the movie is to be in the $80 million range and feature a cast of relative unknowns (so you can quash those Rob Pattinson or Gordon-Levitt rumors at this point). And the story will be pared down to center on a high school kid who is dealing with the knowledge that his uncle died even though the teen had the power to stop it.
The touchstone for the new movie will not be the 1960s comics, which were the inspiration behind the movies by Raimi, who grew on up on them, but rather this past decade's "Ultimate Spider-Man" comics by Brian Michael Bendis and Mark Bagley where the villain-fighting took a back seat to the high school angst.

Why don't they start a Peter Parker tv show on the CW if they want to go back to the high school look. Smallville is ending and we can use another teen hero show.

@ Insert: I agree on all points related to Spiderman's backstory, but if they're basing this reboot around Ultimate Spiderman it's probably not going to be what your hoping for.

"Gritty" means it will be filmed in Spanish. My definition is as valid if not more valid than every other one I've heard here.

The budget doesn't matter. Plenty of great movies with special effects have been made on equivalent budgets. Just cuz they decide to shave 100mil or so off a traditional budget, like TDK's 180mil won't make it look any worse. It all depends on the screenplay.

It doesn't really matter who directs as long it's good.
A really upset Peter would be different to see, but the newer will still have mistakes as well. It really depends on what Webb truly wants to do, directors hold back information as well. Well most of them do, which is a given.
The studio wants Spiderman to be like Batman in so many ways, since it did really well.
For me, I simply don't care what I see as long it's good enough to watch. With other characters, like Wolverine should only be in R rated films. Granted, Jackman did a good job, but I'll always feel that he's holding back.
With the Web Crawler you can only go so far to the edge.
What Marvel and some of the studios think regarding Punisher or Wolverine that they need to be kid friendly. What Jackman needs to realize is that Logan is a loner and has a temper to boot.
I watched Wolverine last night so that's why I mentioning him. Gavin really needs to read the comic's to get it right.
Since Webb really wants this job, he needs to buy those comics and read them before he does something. He'll be the one that says to the writer, not good enough and read these comics to get it right. If he doesn't, then heads will role either way.

Death is gritty, and Spider-Man's backstory is shrouded in death. It's just that Raimi's version never got that concept down. The way Harry died in part 3 was just comical, while in the comics it hits closer to home: drug addiction combined with the Goblin formula resulted in his death. Last time I checked, drug addiction is pretty gritty. Then there's Gwen Stacy, Peter's first true love, who was either murdered by the Green Goblin or died as a result of a snapped neck on Spidey's web when he saves her. Not knowing if your best friend's father murdered the love of your life or if it was your own doing is gritty if you ask me. Raimi failed to make this emotional connection by introducing Gwen at the last minute.
The reason I'm looking forward to this new direction, at the moment, is that when they say "grittier" it makes me hopeful that this reboot will tackle the issues I mentioned that Raimi only either hinted at or didn't bother to acknowledge. His trilogy was decent(1 being fun, 2 being fantastic, and 3 being poor) but there's an entirely different direction one could take it.
Sorry if I sounded like a dick.

Raimi's 3rd outing was the studio's problem. They wanted him to use Venom and therefore he had to split his storytelling time, hence why the love/hate triangle sucked so much and why Sandman was more or less a pointless character that just chewed up runitme. Unfortunately teen angst films do too well in theaters, so that seems to be why they're taking the series in 'that' direction. They'll find that they're gonna lose many of the $$$ put forth by Raimi fans when this new one comes out if they stick with this teen angst bullsh*t.

take a look at this. I found it on another site.
The stories in the comics will deviate greatly from the movies. No movie version ever captures the comics 100% (and probably never will, unless comic book writers produce their own movies).
Ultimate Spider-Man in itself is differetn from the original Spider-Man comics published from 1962 onward. It is a fresh re-imagining of the classic stories, with many characters and situations altered to suit more recent times.
Because of this, Spider-Man (in Ultimate Spidey) has remained a teenager in High School much longer than he did in the original series.
The Spider-man movies borrow heavily from the more recent Ultimate Spider-Man, as opposed to the classic 1960s stories, but they do not (and aren't intending to) perfectly retell the comic stories.
So we've all ready seen the Ultimate version.

No I won't shut up, and it was published but still it's with an unethical publishing company.
I liked Raimi's version, what I didn't care for was the death of the villains and of Harry.
I was planning on reading some of the back issues and still intend to but here's the thing,
I prefer the old Spidy, until I do read the old back issues of Ultimate I'll reserve my judgment.
I've looked gritty up, it's sand and dark comedy. Unless, Spiderman was using his skills for evil, then that is gritty.
ha I'm not even upset and why should you, you sound up set about nothing. Chill out,
If I were someone else, they would get upset over the swearing.
I guess I should have said, I'll properly enjoy it since Webb is directing. I saw one of his films this week, he's good but we'll wait and see what he can do.

"I'll post my thoughts if I want to." And so can everyone else. Just because I have a "negative" reaction to one of your comments, doesn't mean I can't post it. I can say this, too: "Shut the f*ck up."
I'll post what I want to post. You'll post what you want to post. Everyone can post what they want to post. It's just up to people with rationality to post rational things.
I did not say "You can't post that." I was just trying to figure out what you were talking about, and quite frankly, your response didn't help matters.
"Forgive" me for making the mistake of thinking you actually read/have read USM judging by your statement "Until then, we have to put up with the Ultimate Spider man." As it turns out, you don't read it, so you were just making a general statement based on nothing. In short, your wording sucks.
"What I meant by enjoyable was fun and had some good story telling" USM, or at least what I've read of it in the past, has that.
...and how the f*ck do you know if you have a "better idea" of what gritty is than the rest of us? What, because you wrote a book that has yet to be published? Blow it out your ass.
Again, I can post that. You can post everything I quoted. You can also retaliate to this comment. And then I can choose to respond again. You don't need to tell me whether you can post your thoughts or not. I know you can, and feel free to. It doesn't mean I won't post my opinion that your opinion sucks.

Mutant
All right, here it goes.
Sure the three films had flaws, being the third was worse than we all expected.
What I meant by enjoyable was fun and had some good story telling, though Toby did try he also failed in the attempt. And the third script was a little weak but who cares about that now.
As I stated below or in another area that I would be happy if both continued, in it's own continually.
Ultimate Spidy, which I haven't read maybe enjoyable.
One I wasn't judging it, I was stating my opinion. It may or may not fail, if it doesn't than that's good enough for me.
With Raimi's version, I would laugh if they decided to return to that universe and have Ben Reilly instead of Parker. Since he does take up the mask, as they did in the comics.
As for gritty, it has two meanings, M.A.S.H did very well for what they did back then and it still entertains even me. Which is dark comedy, not gritty, I know this because I have a better idea of it.
I'll post my thoughts if I want to.

Wow I've missed a lot of conversation haha. Maybe I just read it wrong and initially thought the whole back seat thing was not good, but really if you think about it, even Raimi's films only had a few fight scenes, so I doubt it'd be much different than that. I say maybe like 1 or 2 fight scenes or so, I can deal with that. But if he's becoming Spiderman, wouldn't he be out fighting thugs and what not just so he knows he can do it and not get his assed kicked lol?

Sorry if I don't want a movie made in the style of the latter. But I don't. And I won't pay to have anything to do with it. We needed a movie in the style of the former, because Raimi's series did not get it right. And a USM-inspired film series is not going to get it right, either. ASM and USM are two completely different worlds. Sorry if I don't want Parker the Webmaster.

This movie will likely be melodramatic and lack a lot of what we like with spidey. But Sony is convinced of what they're doing. So we might as well say our piece, try to back it up with some logic (for once) and move on.

@Todd89: What do you mean by "enjoyable" Spidey? Do you mean the wise-cracking Spider-Man we know and love? Because USM pretty much nails that. Or do you mean "enjoyable" as in good stories that showcase Peter's emotional conflicts? Because USM has nailed that in the past, too...so I don't know what you mean. You must really like Sam Raimi's version, when in actuality, the only truly great film out of his trilogy was part 2. Part 1 was fun entertainment, and part 3 was a laughable mess.

Todd, isn't there a famous idiom - if memory serves correct - that reads something like, "Don't judge a reboot by its choice of director, source material, and usage of the words 'grit' and 'teen angst' in its synopsis." Yeah, keep that in mind when you post.
Or maybe it was, "Don't judge a book by its cover..." Whatever.

What are you talking about comrade? i never mentioned or meant to imply 'superiority.' The fact remained that everyone's lives of whom i knew were all full of the same type of trivial teen angst which the love/hate triangle circled around in SM3.
"Remakes on average f*cking suck." That's the same as this. Rebooting with an origin story a decade after already spending lots of money and time on that seems off. They've established a character, so whether or not you keep the same actors, then continue the universe regardless of the predecessors anyway. There's a whole spiderman universe out there, so why recyle the origin story yet again.
And yeah, avatar may LOOK good, but the story isn't engaging at all. Jon Landau by his own admittance said the best way to engage the audience is with the visuals. Wrong. The story has that job. You can have all the kickass visuals you want, but they mean nothing if you've either got a sucky story, or are trying to make something like '2012' which was for the shere purpose of visuals on a big screen. And Avatar will be degraded over the next few months as it leaves imax and theaters for dvd/blu-ray which can't replicate the visuals in as nearly an impressive way. So why everyone is giving a predictable, not very thought out story 5 stars and a billion five plus in comparison to films with some originality is bizarre. Like just about everyone concurs that Hurt Locker was better than avatar, and yet it never got a wide release or any of its deserved profits, and that's a new subject. Not some recycled thing which looks just like GL's Star Wars Prequel Trilogy world. Reason being you can tell they're both digital representation of fictional worlds. So where everyone's getting off on these visuals is odd. The most impressive thing about it was getting the characters to look like the actors playing them. That's it.

Those of you complaining aren't considering every angle of this. The new audience is the same age as a lot of us were when the first Spider-Man came out. Maybe this will appeal to them just as much as Raimi's did to us. It's a new generation, and some of you are already yelling "turn that noise down!" As lax as we are compared to our forbears, are we going to end up calling the next generation a bunch of pussies because we don't like how intellectual their version of our sh*t is.
