A remake announced early last year may finally be moving forward. According to Collider, screenwriters Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus (Iron Man) have come aboard to write the Akira remake.

The remake was announced in February 2008, but there has been nothing new reported on the film since then. The site is reporting that news has been slim on the film because the writers have been trying to perfect the script, and the writing duo are about to hand in their script in the near future. It was also confirmed that the story was still to be set in a post-apocalyptic Manhattan in the near future.

If the script meets approval, it was said that the film could go into production next year for a 2011 tentpole release. We'll keep you posted as soon as more information is known on the film.

This should not be adapted to live action!! It will be like another speed racer with all the CG. They'll kill it! If it's not broken don't fix it! This film is still ahead of our time as it is!

I wonder if Leonardo Dicaprio and Joseph Gordon Levitt are still cast for this. I'm guessing when they say post-apocalyptic Manhattan in the near future, they mean it's probably not going to look like the Manhattan we know, really it can look like anything depending on what the director and art department come up with. I'm throwing this one up in the air, it could be bad it could be good, but in the end we still have the original.

At least its not like Let The Right One In, thats only been out maybe a year and this douche bag from Cloverfield decides it needs a remake already. Akira has been out almost 20 years, its had more then plenty of time to be circulated and gain a huge fan base. Where as movies like Let The Right One In are still growing.

Idk. I mean I am bummed about this not being in Japan, but I still want to see it. Leo will have to approve of it. Hes really into the original. I pray all works out, and I am glad its going to be a successful release, unlike 20th Century Fox's last years tent pole release The Day the Earth Stood Still. Fingers crossed folks.

  10. Twisted Smile (The Untold Smile)

I think what bothers me more than the remake idea is the damn setting. Why the hell are they setting it over here? Are they going to change the characters too? This is so lame. They are going to f*ck up a classic.

What the hell?? Manhattan? This is not Akira at all. Turning foreign films into American films are annoying. Akira is masterpiece of Japan's anime film industry!!! It's should be Tokyo as it always have been. What's wrong with Japan?
