Netflix Dumps Qwikster DVD Service Plans

Netflix scraps plans for separate DVD rental service
Netflix, Inc. (Nasdaq: NFLX) today said it will not rename its DVD-by-mail service and that its U.S. members will continue to go to the Netflix website for both unlimited streaming and unlimited DVDs.

Netflix said in a September 18 blog post that its DVD-by-mail service would operate at Qwikster.com. Instead, U.S. members will continue to use one website, one account and one password for their movie and TV watching enjoyment under the Netflix brand.

"Consumers value the simplicity Netflix has always offered and we respect that," said Netflix co-founder and CEO Reed Hastings. "There is a difference between moving quickly -- which Netflix has done very well for years -- and moving too fast, which is what we did in this case."

Netflix today informed its U.S. members in personal emails and a post on the Netflix Blog. You can read the full blog post below, which was written by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings.

"It is clear that for many of our members two websites would make things more difficult, so we are going to keep Netflix as one place to go for streaming and DVDs.

This means no change: one website, one account, one password... in other words, no Qwikster.

While the July price change was necessary, we are now done with price changes.

We're constantly improving our streaming selection. We've recently added hundreds of movies from Paramount, Sony, Universal, Fox, Warner Bros., Lionsgate, MGM and Miramax. Plus, in the last couple of weeks alone, we've added over 3,500 TV episodes from ABC, NBC, FOX, CBS, USA, E!, Nickelodeon, Disney Channel, ABC Family, Discovery Channel, TLC, SyFy, A&E, History, and PBS.

We value our members, and we are committed to making Netflix the best place to get movies & TV shows.

Thank you.

-Reed"

I have lost a lot of faith in this company. They are all over the place these days.

@gandoff2169: Games will probably be a separate plan if they ever offer them.

In the meantime, since everyone complains about how much netflix doesn't have, then price hikes are probably attributed to acquiring more titles in their library. Knowing now how many didn't leave their service, they were able to spend extra cash for more content without running the risk of losing money.

@gandoff2169 -- It's an additional charge, like with Blu-Ray. Or at least would've been..

Well did they think adding another website and account would make things easier?? This is a company saving move on their part.

The million dollar question is, when they start offering games, what will they begin to charge for the services then?

God forbid they listen to the customers and do what the customers want. They messed up and from the looks of it want to keep people happy. What's wrong with that?

    @dan1 That's what I was wondering.

I wonder how much this has to do with the announcement of the Blockbuster/Dish supernova package that all the sudden gave Netflix the sort of competition that a split brand couldn't handle. I've already planned on making the switch sometime this month.
