Netflix CEO Reed Hastings announced a separation of DVD and video streaming
Reed Hastings wrote via his blog:
"For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming. Most companies that are great at something - like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores - do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us) because they are afraid to hurt their initial business. Eventually these companies realize their error of not focusing enough on the new thing, and then the company fights desperately and hopelessly to recover. Companies rarely die from moving too fast, and they frequently die from moving too slowly.
Hi,
I messed up. I owe you an explanation.
It is clear from the feedback over the past two months that many members felt we lacked respect and humility in the way we announced the separation of DVD and streaming and the price changes. That was certainly not our intent, and I offer my sincere apology. Let me explain what we are doing.
For the past five years, my greatest fear at Netflix has been that we wouldn't make the leap from success in DVDs to success in streaming. Most companies that are great at something - like AOL dialup or Borders bookstores - do not become great at new things people want (streaming for us). So we moved quickly into streaming, but I should have personally given you a full explanation of why we are splitting the services and thereby increasing prices. It wouldn't have changed the price increase, but it would have been the right thing to do.
So here is what we are doing and why.
Many members love our DVD service, as I do, because nearly every movie ever made is published on DVD. DVD is a great option for those who want the huge and comprehensive selection of movies.
I also love our streaming service because it is integrated into my TV, and I can watch anytime I want. The benefits of our streaming service are really quite different from the benefits of DVD by mail. We need to focus on rapid improvement as streaming technology and the market evolves, without maintaining compatibility with our DVD by mail service.
So we realized that streaming and DVD by mail are really becoming two different businesses, with very different cost structures, that need to be marketed differently, and we need to let each grow and operate independently.
It's hard to write this after over 10 years of mailing DVDs with pride, but we think it is necessary: In a few weeks, we will rename our DVD by mail service to "Qwikster". We chose the name Qwikster because it refers to quick delivery. We will keep the name "Netflix" for streaming.
Qwikster will be the same website and DVD service that everyone is used to. It is just a new name, and DVD members will go to qwikster.com to access their DVD queues and choose movies. One improvement we will make at launch is to add a video games upgrade option, similar to our upgrade option for Blu-ray, for those who want to rent Wii, PS3 and Xbox 360 games. Members have been asking for video games for many years, but now that DVD by mail has its own team, we are finally getting it done. Other improvements will follow. A negative of the renaming and separation is that the Qwikster.com and Netflix.com websites will not be integrated.
There are no pricing changes (we're done with that!). If you subscribe to both services you will have two entries on your credit card statement, one for Qwikster and one for Netflix. The total will be the same as your current charges. We will let you know in a few weeks when the Qwikster.com website is up and ready.
For me the Netflix red envelope has always been a source of joy. The new envelope is still that lovely red, but now it will have a Qwikster logo. I know that logo will grow on me over time, but still, it is hard. I imagine it will be similar for many of you.
I want to acknowledge and thank you for sticking with us, and to apologize again to those members, both current and former, who felt we treated them thoughtlessly.
Both the Qwikster and Netflix teams will work hard to regain your trust. We know it will not be overnight. Actions speak louder than words. But words help people to understand actions.
Respectfully yours,
-Reed Hastings, Co-Founder and CEO, Netflix

They need to just make everything available for online streaming. That seems to be the thought process behind where they're heading anyway.

I used Blockbuster for a time, and had major issues with them on billing mistakes and then slow mailings. They, for a super sized company they was suppose to be, did not have the structural in place for mailing movies like netflix. I used them for the game option to. Was thinking, two bird with one stone. Movies, end netflix, and game, end gamefly. But after 2 months, I had enough, and went back to how I had it. Now if netflix dosn't change it's prices for the game additions when they make quickster, then I may end my gamefly account, and up for the dvd/game quickster for max rental options. @thedude-abides I agree with your assessment on that area. But I think thats why they changed the amounts for the services and started separating them. To already have the prices fixed so when someone enrolls for games and movies, they feel they are getting a major deal. Then the 7 bucks for streaming separably not such a issue. With blockbuster offer dvds and games on the same service for at least 2 years, netflix has to catch up. But at the cost of some loyal subscribers over price changes and service changes.
Now if, they announced Netflix was going to add games, and prices would change slightly, then that would have seen as a OK move. But to announce this now, after the failure that was the original change with NO real explanation, only seams like they are trying to save face for a bad move initially. If this was the explanation given on day one, there may not have been such a foul cry.

Not sure of the logic here. They already have the option for streaming or delivery, and the option for dvd or blu ray. Sounds like they were intent on adding video games to the mix, and thought the "Netflix" title didn't fit that particular aspect of their business.
I'm interested to see how different the prices will be for both. I know they said there would be no raise in prices, but somehow my ears are ringing with the eerily reminiscent sounds of one H.W. Bush telling me to read his lips while he repeats the phrase, "No new taxes." I think we know how that turned out.
This move is about them losing millions because most people weren't willing to pay twice as much for the delivery option, and more and more members were downgrading to the streaming only option. Now that "Netflix" members won't have the doubly priced delivery option staring them in the face, it may open the door for a raise in membership dues. The same is true for Qwikster. Without the substantially lower streaming option price to compare it to, they could essentially raise their dues as much as they want. If I had to bet, I'd say that's exactly what this move is about. Otherwise they'd just change their name to Qwikster and add a video game option.

@XxNickTheFilmCriticXx Pardon my ignorant comment, "Qwikster sucks" seems like the appropriate statement given the article. ;)
(Don't worry I'm just messin' with ya) I can't complain, being it was something I had for free. But it's not something I would pay extra money for that's all.

I love Netflix even though they separated the streaming from the DVD/Blu Rays. The streaming works work and they do have a lot of great movies to watch. I am just hoping this new service with the video games is just as good for a great price.

I just signed up for Netflix over the weekend... was the best thing I've done in a long time... no regrets... I watched several movies and comedy specials... all with out a glitch. I can see us doing with out it now. Netflix keep the great content coming and I'll be with you for the long haul.

What do you mean crap? Is it constantly stopping the movie you are watching? That's your internet not them. Is it the selection, do you feel it's limited, if so you need to broaden your horizon (not trying to be a dick here, honestly) I'm tired of people bitching and wining and about how Netflix's streaming content. I'll ask them have you seen several movies and they so "no". There SO MANY great movies on netflix it's absurd. You just gotta take a leap and watch something you think you might not like.

Never been interested in streaming I prefer walking to the video store instead of getting it in the mail. I may sound like a dinosaur but walking into the video store you might see another movie or game in the isle that might catch your interest.
