Neill Blomkamp Up for a District 9 Sequel or Prequel?

It seems that the director of one of the biggest sci-fi hits of last year is interested in a follow-up film. The Los Angeles Times' Hero Complex Blog recently spoke with District 9 director Neill Blomkamp, who spoke about his interest in either a sequel or a prequel film.

But a sequel might be interesting. I know what I'm doing next so it wouldn't be right away. But the concept of aliens in Johannesburg is such an appealing idea to me and the issues of race and how they meet. All of the things that I had going on with it. I wouldn't mind messing around with it again. I'm open to it if the story works and there's a reason to do it. And [Copley's character] Wikus is so funny to me, I'm very interested in a sort of passive racist like that. If you go forward [with his story beyond District 9] it's more of a traditional film but if you go backward I'd be intrigued in that. I'm not so interested in aliens coming back and blowing things up but [a prequel] might be interesting.

As for that next film he mentioned, Blomkamp wouldn't give any specific details, but he did reveal a few details.

The setting for the next film takes place 150 years from now. There are two cities that I'm choosing between. They would play as themselves. They are not in South Africa. The success of District 9 has made things a lot easier. I can get other things made.

Are you kidding me??? The ending SCREAMS sequel!! The story of what happens when the Aliens return to get their ppl and Wickus possibly getting cured? That story can go in so many directions. As for the prequel-Why did they crash? Whats the story behind why some of the aliens arent as smart as some others. What was Wikus like before aliens landed? So much story there!! Cant go wrong w prequel or sequel.

Yeah I think the studio would tell him "maybe since you ended it with kind of a sequel-ish ending, we should do that". A prequel could be cool too, like why they came here and why did it break down etc. I always wondered that, but those 2 things could be told in the sequel, eliminating that prequel business.

so uh... that whole thing about the alien running off to get reinforcements didn't grab your attention and make you wonder what would happen next?

    well it did for me.

I'd rather see District 9 stand as a singular sci-fi entity, just like I'm glad they never adapted the Blade Runner sequels to film. I don't think there's really anywhere to go with a sequel.

Blomkamp sounds prequel. But either of the two is a great movie. The promised return of the alien however is exciting for a sequel...

I'm down with this as well. If no sequel happens, oh well, it was fine by itself. But if he feels like he wants to share the rest of the story to us, I'm aboard :)

(Insert Username Here) i agree with you, it should remain a stand alone classic

I agree Fallen. He comes up with amazing ideas. I just think the World War Z style the way it is written, is basically the same film style as District 9. Can't wait to see more from this guy.

That wouldn't be a half bad idea Cripple. But I think a directo as original as his type likes to write and create his own projects.

Anyone else agree he should totally replace Forster as director for World War Z?

No prequel is needed. What would the point in that be? The story of how the aliens arrived was told doc*mentary style in the fist film, and up until Wikus' adventure, I take it nothing "exciting" really happened lol

A sequel is the logical choice...actually, no follow up would be the best choice, but that's probably out of the picture after D9's success. I'd rather there wasn't another movie(a stand alone classic) but if there is one, I'd rather it be a sequel.

Blomkamp is well on his way to becoming a legend in the sci-fi genre. I wonder if he'll ever branch out to other genres...
