NBC Opens Up The Rockford Files Again
The original show starred James Garner and had Stephen J. Cannell as its writer-producer. Garner played an ex-con private eye who ran his business out of a trailer in Malibu. His job put him face to face with some of the sleaziest and sexiest people LA had to offer.
"It's one of the shows that made me want to become a writer," Shore stated. "I had no interest in adapting any old stuff, but this was the one exception."
The plan is to bring the show into the 21st Century but stick with the same motifs of the original.
"What makes Rockford timeless is that he's vulnerable, he's flawed. He's used to hustling and getting hustled," Shore offered. "Sometimes he's a hero and sometimes he runs away."
This new version of The Rockford Files came about when Carell's company asked about the rights to the property. They had recently put together a production deal with Universal Media Studios.
