Natalie Portman Up for Female Lead in Thor?

As if there weren't enough rumors floating around about casting for Thor, here comes another one. Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily recently wrote a bit about possible casting for the film, and mentioned that she had heard that Natalie Portman was up for the female lead in the film.

Now, this mention comes at the end of a long list of possible male actors who are up for Thor, including Alexander Skarsgard, who has already been reported by several sources as a strong possibility. Additionally she says that the following actors have been tested for the role; Charlie Hunnam, Tom Hiddleston, Liam Hemsworth and Joel Kinnaman. She also mentioned that she had heard that Josh Hartnett had been tested for the role, but she listed him as a contender for Thor himself, instead of as Loki.

There was no mention as to which character Portman is being considered for, other than as the "female lead". From reading the comics, the obvious choices are either as Sif, Thor's beloved from Asgard and a warrior goddess in her own right, or Jane Foster, who is a nurse that falls in love with Thor's mortal alter-ego, Donald Blake.

Thor was released May 6th, 2011 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan SkarsgÄrd, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Idris Elba. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.

better damn well be Jane Foster. No offense to Nat, but she has neither the height or the beauty to be Sif. 'Nuff said.

She would be a good choice. Natalie Portman did a good job in V for Vendetta. She would be a good choice for playing Jane Foster. Now for the thing as Josh Hartnett could be a contender for Thor. Even though its just a rumor. Josh Hartnett couldnt pull it off as being Thor if they were thinking of choosing him.

Did somebody say "Jessica Biel or Megan Fox"? You realize that whoever they cast should actually be able to act, right? This isn't just about eye candy.

Frankly I think Natalie needs this movie. She tried to break into the action genre before, but was too much a bit player. Given the right amount of screen time as any character that is the female lead in this movie I think she could get a good push career wise. I know she can do the physical stuff that may be required, and she can certainly act any part. I hope this becomes more than a rumour.

Why are there so many people thinking that no one cares for this movie just because they don't??
Personally I'm very exited, Thor is like Marvel's version of "The Lord of the Rings" and with someonoe as cool as Kenneth Brannagh directing is bound to be great.
Even the thought of Natalie Portman playing anything in this movie is just too much to handle, THIS IS GOING TO BE GREAT!!
And I want to hear something about Captain America too. What's new with that one?

Man, anyone who have seen TRUE BLOOD, knows that Skarsgard, can pull out a good THOR, perhaps he can act very well as you have seen it in GENERATION KILL.

Well, seeing how it's my opinion that matters, anyway :)
    Natalie Portman: Sure. Why not?

I'll be excited for this when a trailer comes out (I know and care nothing for Thor... at the moment).

Skarsgard is an unknown and your saying PORTMAN isn't as big as the role of a goddess? Give me a break. She's a great actress

    3 years agoby @insertusernamehereFlag

  20. DEZZMOND

She's not a good enough actress to play a role as big as the role of a goddess is. She is too cold and somehow plastic in her acting.
Skarsgard is a cool choice for playing Thor.

    3 years agoby @dezzmondFlag

  21. T.Clark

Great actress. I think she'll fit in nicely, even as a goddess.

Josh Hartnett is better suited for Loki than Thor.

Tobey McGuire isn't "superhero" material, yet plays Spiderman well in 1&2, so, Portman would be ok...maybe Jessica biel or Megan Fox to play Sif...

  23. LEO: Lord Epsilon Omega

If Portman does get cast in this movie, I hope she's playing Jane Foster. She's too... for lack of a better term... girly and fragile to play a goddess like Sif. I mean sure, she sort of became a warrior half way through V For Vendetta, but she still wasn't really "goddess" material.

Oliver ur clearly not a huge comic fan or anything, not that that is bad, but if u were u would know Thor has a huge following and is one of the more loved marvel heroes. ppl def care for this film.

Yeah i like the rumor that Alex Skarsgard will play Thor, Hartnet to play Loki, and Portman to play Sif. i hope that that is wut happens and not some variation.

i want some news on Captain America though, we keep getting Thor, and Iron Man, and we've even started getting Spider-man 4 but where is the Cap news.

  25. -comrade-

So, Sif, Hela, or Amora (I don't see the third happening though, at least not for Portman)

Jane Foster probably won't be in this one, as I heard they were going more for Ultimate Thor, where
    there is no Donald Blake.

Marvel wouldn't invest millions in a Thor movie if no one cared about it...it helps to visualize a Zack Snyder/300-ish style and tone to conceive it.

Natalie Portman starring in anything is good.
