Monopoly Is Still Happening!

Many thought, maybe even hoped, that the proposed board game adaptation Monopoly had fallen into the dustbin of history with director Ridley Scott focusing instead on his Alien spin-off Prometheus. That certainly isn't the case according to Hasbro CEO Brian Goldner.

"Monopoly is still happening, and we're developing a great story. It's a very fun take. Ridley Scott is still the perfect creative steward, because he creates these great, fictionalized worlds. It's going to be a very fun story to tell. It's a very human and personal story. It's not really 'Wall Street,' not at all. It's a fictionalized story of a family, and there's a lot of intrigue in the story. Suffice it to say, it's a story about a family with a history, and we're projecting that into current times. But it's not Wall Street.' It's more about property ownership and of the play-pattern of the game."

Though the movie was set to begin shooting in 2012, Brian Goldner insists that there is no rush for Monopoly to go into production, as he doesn't want to tie it in with our current financial and economic climate. He went onto call Monopoly a "timeless story".

Monopoly won't see theater screens until at least 2014 or 2015.

Monopoly is in development . The film is directed by Ridley Scott.

@thedude-abides True. The Social Network did have the benefit of relating to an entire generation of internet users. But I still can't help but think there's some potential behind this; perhaps if they relate it to the tough economic times it could be relevent in a way similar to TSN. Overall, it could either bomb or be surprisingly good. Guess we'll have to see.

Really?! The world is really coming to an end. Another creative movie coming from Hollywood. We got this, then we got Battleship (could be decent), next is Candyland. Lets get real Hollywood.

I will say this @insertusernamehere: U do bring up very valid points, of which I agree with every one of them. But as u said, the movie about Facebook turned out to be the story of the creation of Facebook and the people involved. There was story there.

This is taking an inanimate object - a board game - and, as u said, presumably making it a backdrop using the elements and themes the board game entails. Where u liken this to Social Network, I would liken it to the American Girl movies. By that I mean, where one movie was based on a story, the other was based on a baby doll.

James Cameron just smashed his television. I say the hell with it. Let's have a summer board game Battle Royale for board game supremacy: Life v. Battleship v. Candy Land v. Monopoly. Whichever wins gets to pass go and collect 200 dollars; everything else has to lose a turn.

This is bogus. I don't care what form of rationalization people wanna look at this with; it's ridiculous. Cameron is right. This reeks of desperation by the studios for original material.

I think The Social Network proved that even movies with absurd premises can lead to cinematic brilliance with the right talent on board. When it was first revealed that a movie about Facebook was being developed, the majority of people scoffed at the idea. Granted, while this isn't a story based on the creation of the game Monopoly, it still has potential. I wouldn't think of it as an "adaptation" of the board game...more like a film dealing with themes the game presents, just like The Social Network isn't necessarily a movie "just" about the creation of Facebook. It was about the irony of a man with no friends building the largest social networking experience ever. I think this has potential to be a wild thriller. Monopoly is all about money. Money leads to power, power leads to betrayal, as, again, TSN demonstrated.
