Mickey Rourke Signs on as Whiplash in Iron Man 2
For months now, it has been debated as to whether or not Mickey Rourke was going to end up playing a villain in Iron Man 2 (and furthermore the question has raged on about which villain.) Now, Nikki Finke at Deadline Hollywood Daily says that Rourke has signed a casting deal for the sequel to 2008's Iron Man.
For those coming in to the saga now, Rourke was originally confirmed to play a villain in the film, although reports disagreed as to whether he was playing Whiplash or the Crimson Dynamo. Then the word came out that Rourke was out, after Marvel made an insultingly low offer of $250K for his role in the film. Now it seems that Rourke's agent managed to get the payday up to a more significant level.
Rourke is presently in Russia promoting The Wrestler (for which he has won both the Golden Globe, the Independent Spirit Award and the BAFTA), and it is expected that he'll begin researching the role while there.
If this turns out to be true, it parallels Samuel L. Jackson's experience with being Nick Fury. Jackson was out of the picture to reprise his role as the head of S.H.I.E.L.D. due to a low-ball offer. Later on, Marvel had recanted their original offer, and Jackson is now signed for nine Marvel films, including Iron Man 2.
Marvel may be starting to see the middle-ground between their belief that the characters are what sells the film, and realizing that you need to have talented, visionary people like Rourke, Jackson, Robert Downey, Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow and directors like Jon Favreau to bring those characters to life. If all it took to sell a Marvel film was the character name, both Fantastic Four films would have been more successful than they were.
Iron Man 2 was released May 7th, 2010 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Don Cheadle, Scarlett Johansson, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sam Rockwell, Mickey Rourke, Samuel L. Jackson, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Jon Favreau.

Err
nice.
i've been a rourke fan since i was a kid, so even if he wasn't popular in most circles he was still one of my favorites since Angel Heart.

This is great news, this movie will be awesome. Is Sam Rockwell still in this or was that just a rumor?

i completely agree with ridgl. both RDj and Rourke weren't household names or really relevant at all until very recently, but is that a bad thing that they r both booming now, no.
i mean Christian Bale wasn't a big star til Batman Begins, he was acting for awhile but not a star, now he is in the new Terminator, would he be in that if not for Batman, i don't think so. same goes for Johnny Depp his career was pretty much in the sh*tter until Pirates came out, then he was in everything and now he is considered a hot actor again. it just happens, actors fade and then suddenly come back, i hope Jaun Claude Vam Dam comes back, his performance in JCVD was really good, he deserves another big break.

RDJ and Rourke have been around since I was a kid and both had acting chops that put others to shame, but both took really wrong turns at the time their careers were about to explode. I don't mind him being in IM2 at all.
Freakin' loving the fact that we've seen actors take some villans to equal appeal of the heros (Heath, Tim Roth, Bridges, and who didn't love M Rourke as Marv the quintessential anti-hero?). Up until Spiderman 3, even they were doing a brilliant job. Can we reboot Spiderman 3? LMAO, j/k.

am I the only one who thinks that Mickey Rourke is only getting this part because of the Wrestler? He is the new hot guy in town again like RDJ getting Sherlock Holmes because of Iron Man.
