Mickey Rourke Removing Front Teeth to Play Gay Rugby Player

Mickey Rourke to remove two front teeth for role
Mickey Rourke recently announced his plans to portray Welsh rugby player Gareth Thomas, who has made headlines for being open about his homosexuality, and now it looks like The Wrestler actor is planning to remove his two front teeth for the role, reports Cinematical:

Gareth Thomas' agent Emanuele Palladino says:

"Mickey wants to film everything in Wales, although it is early days. He really wants to throw himself into Welsh and rugby and really learn as quickly as he can. He'll learn Welsh I think, obviously where it is relevant as well. He is going to get rid of his two front teeth and stuff - he will be taking them out. Mickey intends to get as close to the character as he can, as he thinks it is a great story."

Another hurdle for Mickey Rourke is the fact that the British athlete is 20 years younger. The role keeps getting more and more challenging, but it looks like The Wrestler is up to the task and devoted to the role.

No production date has been set.

Nuts... For someone to remove his own teeth to play a role in acting is just nuts. And anyone who says its kool couse he is a great actor who realy goes into his roles, is as crazy. I hope he does the role. He like Downey who had some major down time in his life from past mistakes, are great actors who have come full circle. And he is able to pull this off. But to take your pefectly good teeth out for one movie role,,,,, Thats not only crazy,,, But complete stupidity..

There are not many actors who will dedicate themselves like he is doing for a role, and for that, I salute him.

@Pjwolsker - he did say "Robert Downey Jr's ROLE in Tropic Thunder"... he wasnt referring to Robert Downey Jr. himself.

And as for Rourke taking out his 2 front teeth for the role... He has a dedication to his craft that isn't seen anywhere in life these days... I think its a bit nuts that he would do it, but if he is that dedicated, then by all means, go for it!

@B3njamin did you ever see tropic thunder??? his character in the movie became black.. not Robert Downey jr. and it turned out the character just had make up on and sh*t. get your facts right

This is the most ridiculous news I've ever heard.. It reminds me of Robert Downey Jr's role in Tropic Thunder where he becomes black for the part.. @Daveactor7 No, it was sh*t actually

It's unfortunate that a movie with this much hype is probably going to bomb.

this is kind of strange. i dont think he should do something that will effect him for his life, just for one role. i do think he's a great actor, but i still think thats dumb

@Avrahama um hes an actor. Whatever his character does he will give it his best. Look at Sean Penn, marvelous actor and he made out with a guy in "Milk"

I've met manly macho GAY dudes. And he will be playing a "guy's guy..." Point refuted. :P

    Knock 'em out, Rourke!

If he makes out with another dude I'll lose all respect for him. He's been the new "manly" macho dude in movies to date, and when I see him in a film I always say to myself, "damn Rourke's in it? This is gonna be good!" Some lines you just don't cross if you're the "Guys guy". This is THAT line. What a shame. :(

Is it just me or is Rourke just jumping on everything he gets his hands on and where the hell does he find all the time.

I agree with @Stiles it was a massive story in the UK and well as stated being gay in the maniliest sport about, is a good enough concept to explore much like I dunno say a mountain climber forced to amputate his lower arm to free himself from a boulder.

I wonder how much of this is a sad desperate attempt to win some critical acclaim as an actor and a possible Oscar nod. Sadly, if he does actually pull his teeth that will probably get the Academy excited and combine it with playing a homosexual then he's almost a sure thing for an Oscar, especially if he makes out with another dude.

The movie Tropic Thunder's commentary on acting is funny because it's true: you can attain critical acclaim easily by playing a gay or a partial retard just don't ever go full retard.

I'm liking the dedication to play his character, but like @Narrator said he'll have to live with that for the rest of his life.

Mr Fixit - I don't know how much you know about Rugby, but an openly gay player was pretty much unheard of before this guy came out and it was a big story in the UK, so I think it's pretty unique and notewprthy. Being gay in the manliest sport there is.

As for Rourke pulling his teeth out...that's dumb. Can't he just have a prosthetic like Depp in Ed Wood?

  21. Mr. Fixit

As far as actors and actresses getting into character by doing weird sh*t like pulling their own teeth or taking sh*t to cripple themselves like Cruise did for Born on the Fourth of July - there is no mystery as to why they die strange deaths or have a high Cancer rate.

  22. Mr. Fixit

I just don't see any reason for making the movie. Of course there really is no reason for MOST of the movies they have made, but this is about an athlete who is still alive. What the heck did he do to warrant a movie being made about him? If it's because he is openly gay, so are a lot of people, and they don't have movies made about them.
