Miami Vice Busts Up Pirates For Tops At The Box Office
Pirates did come in second place raking in $20.5 million over the weekend. That brings the total for four weeks to a stupidly impressive amount of $358.2 million domestically. Internationally, Johnny Deep, Orlando Bloom, and Keira Knightly are lighting up the box office as well taking in $217 million to move the worldwide total up to $575.4 million.
Another newcomer made its way into third place - John Tucker Must Die, starring Brittany Snow, Arielle Kebbel, Sophia Bush, Ashanti, and Jesse Metcalfe. The Fox teen comedy made $14 million in its first weekend. That nearly equals the $18 million production budget. Let's just say Fox is having a pretty good year with Ice Age: The Meltdown, X-Men: The Last Stand, The Devil Wears Prada, and now this film.
In fourth place, Sony Animation's first film Monster House scared up theaters for the second week bringing in $11.5 million. That takes the total up to $43.9 million for the film.
Warner Bros. Animation made it into the top five with their newest flick, The Ant Bully, building to $8.1 million over the weekend. The star-studded cast includes Paul Giamatti, Nicolas Cage, Julia Roberts, and Meryl Streep; Tom Hanks is serving as the executive producer.
The threesome of Owen Wilson, Matt Dillon and Kate Hudson kept chugging in You, Me and Dupree. The summer comedy came in sixth place and took in $7 million over the weekend to up the three week total to $59 million, which just exceeds the $54 million production budget.
Seventh place went to M. Night Shyamalan Lady in the Water, dropping four spots since its open last week. The mystery/thriller only made $7 million this weekend to take the two week total to $32 million; that seems impressive, but the budget for the film, starring Paul Giamatti and Bryce Dallas Howard, was $55 million. This film is proving to be the worst two week total for Shyamalan, and continuing a very bad summer season for Warner Bros.
The brother team of Shawn and Marlon Wayans came in eighth place with their comedy, Little Man. The Sony film took in $5.1 over the weekend to bring the three week total to $50.1 million.
The afore mentioned The Devil Wears Prada took ninth place this weekend bringing in $4.7 million over the weekend. That ups the massively impressive five week total to $106 million, more than tripling the $35 million production budget - and gives stars Meryl Streep, Anne Hathaway, Stanley Tucci, and Emily Blunt reasons to celebrate.
Rounding out the top ten is Kevin Smith's Clerks II taking in $4 million over the weekend. That brings the two week total to $18.5 million for the remake of Kevin's first film, Clerks from 1994.
Will Ferrell is starting August off with a bang; his newest comedy, Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby comes out. In the film, he plays a NASCAR driver who 'falls off the edge' to be blunt. Look for this to take over the top spot at the box office.
Also hitting theaters this Friday, Toni Collette and Robin Williams in The Night Listener, the horror The Descent, Paramount and Nickelodeon's animated film Barnyard, and this year's Sundance Film Festival winner, Quinceanera.
Miami Vice was released July 28th, 2006 and stars Colin Farrell, Jamie Foxx, Li Gong, Naomie Harris, CiarĂ¡n Hinds, Justin Theroux, Barry Shabaka Henley, Luis Tosar. The film is directed by Michael Mann.
