McG Sheds Some Light on Terminator Salvation Sequel

While director McG's new film hasn't hit theaters yet, he's already talking about the sequel. Film Journal recently spoke to McG who revealed some interesting tidbits about a sequel to his upcoming film, Terminator Salvation, including that the second film might take place before Judgment Day as well.

"I strongly suspect the next movie is going to take place in a [pre-Judgment Day] 2011," McG reveals. "John Connor is going to travel back in time and he's going to have to galvanize the militaries of the world for an impending Skynet invasion. They've figured out time travel to the degree where they can send more than one naked entity. So you're going to have hunter killers and transports and harvesters and everything arriving in our time and Connor fighting back with conventional military warfare, which I think is going to be fucking awesome. I also think he's going to meet a scientist that's going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick [who famously played the T-1000 in Terminator 2: Judgement Day], talking about stem-cell research and how we can all live as idealized, younger versions of ourselves."

Terminator Salvation was released May 21st, 2009 and stars Christian Bale, Sam Worthington, Moon Bloodgood, Helena Bonham Carter, Anton Yelchin, Jadagrace, Bryce Dallas Howard, Common. The film is directed by McG.

Again... 2011 is a continuity error. Judgment Day already began before that retards.

This sounds cool, but why would they have to go back in time again? Is it not unnecessary at this point? This story sounds cool and I want to see it, but it also sounds a little like overkill right now.

Time travel is central to the entire Terminator saga. To remove the time travel element just because some fans can't wrap their brains around the possible time streams/outcomes is just silly. The smartest thing Hollywood could do is stop listening so intently to what random internet boards have to say about ANYTHING and just produce good films.

However, if they were going to keep it and R rated series, I'd be thrilled to see many sequels down the road.

I was really excited for Salvation, but then I found out it's a PG-13 film, so now I'm not so excited. Stupid Hlooywood! Didn't you figure out that when you make an installment in an R-rated series that's PG-13, it doesn't work? LIVE FREE OR DIE HARD IS A PERFECT EXAMPLE!!! Anyhow, my point is that if this is PG-13, then a sequel, will probably also be PG-13, which will lead to very many bad things...

first off i have heard that time travel is only mentioned in the film and lightly touched upon so you don't need to worry about that and the sarah connor chronicles was never ment to tie t2 with t3, we knew that when sarah and john jumped through time from 1997 to 2007

Have you all watched "Temanator:The Sarah Connor Chronicles"? ....Ok...If you have, you probably thought: "WTF!? This thing is becoming way too complicated and boring! At the end of season 2 John Connor from past came to future........WTF,and that's prequel to Terminator 3. I heard that they are not going to make season 3 and it's better for all of us to forget that sh*t as soon is posible. Now.....Terminator Salvation. I love it. I hope it will work but ....pleaseeeee...Do not comlicate this thing too. I hate that time machine thing!

'Going to look a lot like present-day Robert Patrick' doesn't mean the actor will actually be in the film, but I think it would be great if he is.

Time travel has always been what f*cked up this franchise (and many others) from the very beginning. I hoped McG's reboot was going to avoid that but I was wrong.
Another weak point of the first 2 movies is having set Judgment Day to 1997, when after 10+ years we still don't have anything remotely intelligent like Skynet.
The Terminator franchise needed a complete reinvention, not a requel.

I still feel that each film should end on how the last three films began. the first should set up at the end sending kyle reese and the first terminator, the second should be sending arnie and the t-1000, and the third should show arnie and the chick terminator, but all remaining in the future. each series to compliment the other, but please keep it in the future, in each film it is touched slightly of the future war, and that is what we all want isnt it? WE WANT TO SEE THE WAR, we want to see how it all ends if this indeed will only be a trilogy.

    Pre-Judgment Day is 2003 and before. Pre-Judgment Day 2011 ?!?!
    That doesn't make any sense.

Robert Patrick returning as a 50-year old scientist isn't a bad idea at all. Heck, maybe we can get to see how he uses the stem-cell research on himself to create a younger version, which in turn SkyNet will use to create their T-1000 prototype with. Ithink that is the direction that McG is going with. Especially since we're gonna see the origin of the T-800 in "Salvation."

Man you guys are freaking out haha. The original movies were based on machines coming from the future to our present time and you don't like that idea? Umm alright? Makes no sense but whatever. That's why you are a fan of the franchise, because of Terminator 2. It is the franchise, and Micheal Bein from the first one of course. The franchise has always been about time travel and stopping the war etc. You think they are just all of a sudden going to stop using that plotline lol? If John is going back in time that means he f*cked up in this upcoming movie (Salvation) somehow, because he obviously didn't change anything from the 3rd movie (unless they are ignoring the 3rd movie altogether like it never existed and go from T2). They are in the future and judgement day is happening, maybe John loses somebody dear to him so he wants to go back and save them or something. It's not like it's a hard plot to figure out. I don't know why you guys are so bent out of shape over the actual Terminator plotline.

    Ok i'm so baffed.

Bringing back Robert Patrick as a scientist, wasn't he the liquid man in T2.
And will adult John connor run into his younger self?

This seems like an interesting concept, but it seems like its going to get really complicated for auidences if they take it in this direction.
This sounds like the kind of story only a hardcore teminator fan would understand, which would end in the film getting blasted for its over-complicated and complexed storyline leaving the auidence dumbfolded.

what the heck I though these 3 terminator films where going to be set in the future and end it not go back and time and tell the same story ove againg this sounds like t3 story 2 me. just keep it in the future and give us a awesome ending.

This idea might actually work, but I would much rather them stay with the post apocalyptic concept. But who knows, maybe I might change my mind after some more news about this. They just better not mess this up, because this one of my favorite franchises of all time.

What the hell is this sh*t!!! NO!!! No more movies that take place pre-Judgement Day! John Connor comes back to 2011?! I wish Christian Bale would stand up and say 'NO' to this direction.

I heard about the Robert Patrick thing before and that sounds interesting. But enough time travel from the future to our present! IT'S SO DONE! TOO MUCH!!!! Have some respect for the material! Stop trying to reinvent everything! Because when you do that it almost always sucks! Yes...you know what I'm talking about!!!

Despite the original ending for "Terminator Salvation" that leaked online (which was pretty damned awful!), I'm still hoping this new movie will steer the franchise away from the crap of "Terminator 3" and back on track, respecting James Cameron's vision.

This is the last movie I'm counting on of the summer 2009 releases. As I continue to state, I have faith in McG and I have faith that "Terminator Salvation" can be really great.
