Matthew Vaughn confirmed to direct X-Men: First Class
X-Men: First Class begins production this summer for a June 3, 2011 release. Bryan Singer, who conceived the story for First Class and directed the original X-Men and its sequel X2, is producing along with Lauren Shuler Donner and Simon Kinberg.
"I've been a fan of Matthew's since Layer Cake," said Singer. "He has a deft hand with multiple characters and storylines, and a great love of the X-Men universe. I feel the combination of this story and his vision will make for an exciting and original X-Men film."
Added Twentieth Century Fox president of production, Emma Watts: X-Men: First Class presents an exciting opportunity to further explore the history and relationships of these beloved characters. Matthew's combination of talent, verve and vision is perfectly suited to the task."
X-Men: First Class, following the classic Marvel mythology, charts the epic beginning of the X-Men saga. Before Charles Xavier and Erik Lensherr took the names Professor X and Magneto, they were two young men discovering their powers for the first time. Before they were archenemies, they were closest of friends, working together, with other Mutants (some familiar, some new), to stop the greatest threat the world has ever known.
X-Men: First Class was released June 3rd, 2011 and stars James McAvoy, Laurence Belcher, Michael Fassbender, Bill Milner, Kevin Bacon, Rose Byrne, Jennifer Lawrence, Beth Goddard. The film is directed by Matthew Vaughn.

I re-watched Xmen and X2 the other day. I forgot how well made those movies are. Got me really excited for this, since they only tease at the other characters in those movies.

@jc: I also hope it's a reboot. As much as I love the first two films, the way they muddled up the continuity with The Last Stand and Wolverine pretty much means they CAN'T fit this into the existing canon unless they cut out Angel and Iceman.

they need to have all the characters that are in that picture

X-Men: First Class is a live action movie... Matthew Vaughn will hopefully bring a fresh look to the X-Men series, and should be a good choice for director. I agree that the previous Related Stories headlines make it rather confusing as to what is Vaughn's current status (i.e. off again/on again).

lol look at all the related stories "Matthew Vaughn Directing First Class", "Matthew Vaugh NOT Directing First Class", "Matthew Vaughn Back Directing First Class", "Matthew Vaughn Starring in First Class?" "Matthew Vaughn Flies United Airlines First Class", "Matthew Vaughn goes back to school for his First Class"...Jesus Christ this is ridiculous.

Josh, I'd rather it be #1. #2 seems intriguing as well, but how would they handle it? Would Emma be replaced by Jean, or would this follow Scott and Emma through the years, in a semi reboot?

Nice! Now they just need to come out and declare definitively which of these scenarios that they've previously claimed the movie would follow is actually going to follow:
1) An rebooted origin story following the original five young X-Men (Beast, Angel, Jean, Cyclops, Iceman)
2) A follow up to Origins: Wolverine that has a young Cyclops and Emma Frost leading the team, and fitting into the original X-Men film canon.
3) A spinoff from the current X-men film canon that follows the younger team members (Rogue, Kitty, Jubilee, Iceman).
I've long been waiting for them to sort this issue out, because they've been very wishy-washy on it.

cpark379, this is also the same Singer who directed X-men 1 and 2, and Superman Returns was not bad, but not very good either.

I'm sorry, but is this the same Singer that wrote a story in which Superman had Baby momma issues. I think I'll pass. How about we get Chris Claremount to write a X-men movie.

Matthew is a good director. I haven't watched Kick-Ass because I'm afraid it might ruin the brilliant book for me, but otherwise I loved Layer Cake and Stardust. The man's vision together with the mythology and legends of the series of comics will be a visual treat. I think they might want to tie in Wolverine 2 and Magneto (still going to happen, the news is just around the corner). I have a feeling that Marvel studios and Fox are planning a major X-Men event (sort of like X-men 4) once they tell these small stories. It doesn't mean just because the Avengers and Justice League are coming up that X-men and Spider-Man can't have their fun.

Wow this film will add the whole mythology aspect, full-circle, to the series. Since it seems like those other Origins films aren't getting made (Magneto, Gambit, Deadpool? - only Wolverine 2 so far), this feels like it is the ultimate X-Men: Origins film. Sounds like it will tie into what the XMO: Magneto film was said to potentially portray - the early friendship of Erik Magnus Lensherr and Charles Xavier...when they were soldiers. Can't wait for this, since Singer wrote it, that's just as good as having him back in the director's seat of the X-Men franchise (even if he did write the story to Superman Returns). I am more about the story than camera angles and lighting tones so this should be a great film.

At least Singer had a hand in the story. That's good news. I should be more pumped for this, but that release date makes me hesitant.
I'm interested in seeing what the story will be...original five seems the best way to go to me, but something tells me that won't happen.

Is it June 3rd or July 3rd? Either way, next summer is going to be huge. Thor, Captain America, Green Lantern, Pirates 4, and now First Class. As for Johnson, I'm glad that he got this job after all the back and forth that went on. I think he'll do a great job.
