The Watchmen actor revealed he recently tried out to play Bilbo Baggins
Now he's a father, Goode doesn't even like travelling that much. But just before we met, he'd auditioned for the role of Bilbo Baggins in Guillermo del Toro's two-part film of The Hobbit. As he is the first to admit, he's not an obvious choice - 'Look at the size of me for Christ's sake!' If he got the part, he would, he says, find it almost impossible to refuse - despite the fact that it would involve him spending several months in New Zealand.
The last we heard about the film was that the release date might be pushed yet again to 2012, but it's still not clear if the film will be released in 2011 or 2012. Guillermo del Toro is directing from a script he is co-writing with Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh and Phillipa Boyens. We'll be sure to keep you posted on any and all updates surrounding The Hobbit as soon as we have more information.
A Single Man was released December 11th, 2009 and stars Colin Firth, Julianne Moore, Nicholas Hoult, Matthew Goode, Jon Kortajarena, Paulette Lamori, Ryan Simpkins, Ginnifer Goodwin. The film is directed by Tom Ford.
The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey comes to theaters December 14th, 2012 and stars Cate Blanchett, Saoirse Ronan, Orlando Bloom, Elijah Wood, Martin Freeman, David Tennant, Ian McKellen, Christopher Lee. The film is directed by Peter Jackson.

Matthew Goode is certainly an interesting choice and a step outside the box in terms of expected choices. I have also found him incredibly watchable in the few roles I've seen him in and I think he could pull this off rather well given the chance. Not exactly my first choice, but better than a lot of names that have been tossed around.

Yeah...given that Frodo was a 50-year old hobbit in the LotR films, the actor who plays Bilbo for this shouldn't be much older than Elijah Wood was.
I think Goode is a very interesting choice and I've loved his screen presence in most films. If you haven't seen Woody Allen's Match Point then definitely check it out. Brilliant film.

My point is that Bilbo looked the age when he got the ring, a fifty year old hobbit looks in his twenties thus the main problem. Ian Holm didn't even look 30 to 40 years old, Bilbo looked around 70 years old or slightly younger. Now they want a fifty year old hobbit that looks 32, to me it doesn't make sense at all. Anyway I could go on for ages but I won't.
I wonder what's next after the Hobbit films, the origin story of the Ring, which was introduced in the first film. It would have to focus on other characters than the main ones.
I wouldn't mind seeing a number of short story's as 90 minute features, Tales From the Perilous Realm comes to mind.

In response to the age discussion, hobbits are still very much in their prime at age 50. That's how old Frodo was in LOTR. That's how old Bilbo is in the Hobbit. An actor of the same age as Elijah was in LOTR is the best way to go when casting the younger Bilbo. While it's true the ring made older Bilbo look younger, it still doesn't change the fact that Frodo was 50 at the time of LOTR even though he looks like a human twentysomething.

NO I don't spynet, I don't have a problem about it. Ian Holm played Bilbo, who wore a ring to keep young, his actors age. What I can't get used to is that their adapting the Hobbit to use their needs, by seeing much younger males that don't fit the profile unless Peter and Del Toro are going to use makeup on them to age the actors.
What makes me question about this article is that, this so called actor may be dropped so why print it in the first place.
Bilbo was 111 but not Ian since he was 70 at the time, the character was 61 at the time when he discovered the ring. So why would a 30 to 40 year old actor audition for a character that's 61 years of age when it's for someone much older.

I must admit I wasn't interested in this project so far, since those little Hobbits were the weakest part for me in LOTR, but now that one of my favourite British actors is in the run for the role, I'm totally excited.

@jameslev, K, but that makes no difference, the rest of the argument is sound.

yes but the significance of that was the ring made him look younger

@Todd89 why the hell would they go with someone who is 50 years old in real life? I'll explain it agian: Hobbits live to be about 100-130 years old normally, that means that they reach middle age at about 50, how old Bilbo was. Humans only reach age 100 in extreme cases, leaving our middle age in the 40s range. Therefore, a 50 year old modern day human would look much older than a 50 year old Hobbit. So, They could go with anybody from the age range of about their late 30s to late 40s. Think about it, at age 70 Ian Holm played Bilbo Baggins, who was supposed to be 111. Did you have a problem with that?

This isn't news, the guy is too young for the part, Bilbo isn't sexy and stick within the fifty age range. Otherwise, I'll ignore it and put out slander about the film.
J.J Jameson once said who cares what they think it's my paper, I'll say anything I want.

Ha! What're they trying to do? Make Bilbo sexy? @mosorwvlad, James McAvoy would be better, but I'm not too sure. He's definitely way too skinny, and I think he looks a bit too young, but that's debateable. Personally, I'm still rooting for Martin Freeman. He's really funny, and I think he's a really underrated actor in America.

I'm not liking it one bit. And did they have to post the most bad-ass pic they could find. Bilbo is heroic, yes, but still far from BA.
