Marvel's The Avengers crosses $1 billion at the worldwide box office
The news comes just a week after Marvel's The Avengers shattered records with a $207.4 million opening weekend, the biggest domestic debut of all time. The film has now earned an estimated $373.2 million at the domestic box office and $628.9 million internationally. As one of only 12 films in history to gross $1 billion, it joins Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest, Alice in Wonderland, Disney•Pixar's Toy Story 3, and Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides on Disney's list of billion-dollar films.
"We're obviously thrilled with the global success of The Avengers," said Robert A. Iger, Disney's Chairman and CEO. "It's a fantastic movie and an extraordinary franchise that will continue with more great stories and compelling characters for years to come."
Marvel's The Avengers has set several domestic box office records including the industry's all-time second weekend record with an estimated $103.2 million, fastest film to reach $200 million (3 days), fastest to $300 million (in a record 9 days), and highest Saturday ($69.5 million) and Sunday ($57 million) totals. In addition, its opening day of $80.8 million is the second-highest single-day gross of all time. Moviegoers gave Marvel's The Avengers a rare A+ CinemaScore.
Internationally, Marvel's The Avengers began opening April 25 and is the biggest opening weekend of all time in Mexico, Brazil, Argentina, Ecuador, Central America, Peru, Bolivia, Hong Kong, Malaysia, New Zealand, Philippines, and United Arab Emirates. Marvel's The Avengers has now opened in all major markets except Japan (August 17).
On May 8, Disney announced that a sequel to Marvel's The Avengers was in development, following last month's announcement that a follow-up to 2011's Captain America: The First Avenger will be released April 4, 2014. A sequel to last summer's Thor is scheduled for release November 15, 2013, and the third installment of the hit Iron Man series, which has earned over $1.2 billion worldwide, will arrive in theaters May 3, 2013.
Marvel's The Avengers is the first Marvel Studios film to be marketed and distributed by The Walt Disney Studios.
Marvel's The Avengers was released May 4th, 2012 and stars Robert Downey Jr., Chris Evans, Mark Ruffalo, Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Jeremy Renner, Tom Hiddleston, Clark Gregg. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

If they make good Films and they will make money! Simple Idea. Hollywood has forgotten how to make good films for the most parts. Every once in a while, one comes along... There is Hope!

If Joss Whedon does not return to Avengers 2 as director and write, Marvel/Disney is in trouble. They MUST have him return. It is imperative to that film's success because I can't see another director to make a film as big as Avengers was of it's caliber.

@junior-roberts DC has already said they weren't going to use the stand alone guys. I think they want JLA to its own thing. They might change their minds but Marvels fans will just say DC is copying them. I don't think DC has to be like Marvel but I wish they would use their stand alone guys like Cavill, Bale, and Reynolds.

@superman81 After the success of The Avengers, I think it would be DC's dumbest movie to not even attempt to do a JLA movie and do it the right way. Meaning, use stars from current franchises and build it up to lead to the JLA movie, the same method Marvel used. The Avengers movie alone is gonna lead to at least three spinoffs and a sequel or two.
Sometimes, I can't stand DC...

Like y'all I also expect Men In Black 3 to top Avengers when it is released, but I also think of course it won't have as much critical acclaim, and even though it might have a big debut, it will probably plunge.

@c-a-r-t-m-a-n I never said MIB3 was going to great. I just said it should be #1 when it comes out. I also never said it would be a success. But that doesn't mean that it won't be.

@ringssinger I completely agree with you on that. Joss Whedon being the writer and director of Avengers 2, would be awesome!

I've read a couple of articles where RDJ announced he would not leave the Marvel world as long as they keep bringing in excellent scripts and good directors... Joss Whedon for Avengers 2 please! And hopefully RDJ will stay on for years to come!

@superman81 - after 4 weeks release of Avengers - MIB3(with WS) can go to #1 spot - but that dznt mean anything here - I bet MIB3 will bot make good in the B.O.,, I personally think it will be a very avg movie both via story and revenue..

In the future when Disney decideds to do Avengers 2 they need to make some deals with Fox and Sony so they can get Spiderman and Wolverine because they were also fan favorites.

@superman81 In my opinion that is good news, because now that Robert Downey Jr has played the role as Iron Man/Tony Stark, i honestly cannot see anyone else playing that role.

I haven't found anything out there suggesting that RDJ will leave after Iron Man 3 that isn't just pure speculation. The rumors seem to have started after Kevin Feige was asked a complete "what if" question about rebooting Iron Man if RDJ ever decides to leave, and Feige said they would continue without him but hoped he would stay on for a long time to come.

@MadTatter730 well come back in two weeks and when MiB3 is #1 and let's see what you got to say then. It takes nothing away from Avengers if MiB3 is #1 and its inevitable that it will knock Avengers off the number 1 spot, that's if Battleship doesn't first.

@Acyuta-dude Good point. But, hopefully he'll still be in theAvengers 2 and then anything after that, i assume will be a whole new line of Marvel movies.

@themoviefanatic Yes, this much popularity is chiefly because Robert downey jr.'s portrayal of iron man. Other Marvel films(except Avengers) were not as successful as Iron man 1 & 2. He should do till Avengers 2.

@Acyuta-dude I cannot picture anyone else doing that role either. In fact, i think he might continue to be in the Marvel movies, rather be replaced. If he ever does get replace though, i don't think it will be in this line of Marvel movies.

I heard Robert downey jr. is leaving the Iron man franchise after IM3. I really think he should atleast do IM3, IM4 and Avengers 2. That would be enough!! I cannot picture anybody else doing the role :(
