Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. is described as a show for the whole family
After setting the box office on fire with Marvel's The Avengers last summer, Joss Whedon returns to the small screen with the new ABC series Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D., which he co-created with Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen. ABC entertainment president Paul Lee revealed at the Television Critics Association winter tour today that the pilot has been put on the fast track. We reported last month that ABC is considering a fall 2013 premiere for the series.

The executive revealed that the pilot script is "great," with "a lot of action" and several humorous male-female relationships. While he didn't reveal exactly when production will begin, Paul Lee said that Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. is in a position to be ready, "a lot earlier than others." He also expects this to be a show that parents can watch with their children, much like the network's current hit Once Upon a Time.

"Marvel has the ability to bring the whole family."

Marvel's S.H.I.E.L.D. stars Clark Gregg (Agent Coulson), Ming-Na (Agent Melinda May), Elizabeth Henstridge (Agent Gemma Simmons), Iain De Caestecker (Agent Leo Fitz), and Brett Dalton (Agent Grant Ward), and Chloe Bennet (Skye).

So it will be just like the movies?

@dan1 Completely agree, my friend. TV shows have gotten way too complicated and dark in recent years. They're always about who killed who and all these complicated, miserable plots. Not that I don't watch some of them (Breaking Bad and The Walking Dead), but I do hope this shows brings a more upbeat, adventurous feel to TV.

@brady1138 And I completely agree, this obsession with everything being dark and gritty is grating to always read. I loved Avenger's lighter tone, and I hope the show continues to run with that attitude. Haters gonna hate.

@brady1138 You'd think 1.5 billion dollars would buy a guy some street cred. You'd be wrong, I guess.

WOW....I must have read a different article. Really hope this works well. A show that all family members might enjoy, like the Avengers movie, will be refreshing.

Everybody, please stay calm. I'm tired of everyone saying everything needs to be all dark and gritty. Avengers was pretty family-friendly and audiences and fanboys completely loved it. I doubt it will be any more family-friendly than Avengers.

CAN ABC COUNT THEIR MARVEL'S? I mean, by family, I hope this doesn't suck. To compare this to Once Upon A Time is like asking Hulk to scratch his head when he's angry instead of Smashing things. The cast might be too young. I want to see results and investigation not relationship issues... So when is The next Avengers coming out? 2015?

  14. the Narrator

Agreed with the fella' down there. Big difference between a show that's accessible to the whole family, and being an actual "family show". I expect a good cross between Serenity and Buffy in terms of family when it comes to the primary cast.

I like Once Upon A Time a lot, so this doesn't really bother me. They have plenty of time to fine tune this show to fit the Marvel U.

The Good: Joss works with brother

The Bad: Comparing it to Once Upon a Time

The Ugly: too many young people

    The Right: Get Adults

The Why: Just because several twenty odd year olds are in it doesn't make it good.

Talent must be excellent: Lena Headey - get her in this now.

Who's better: Just because they are pretty doesn't mean they can act, get people like Robert Downy Jr.

    A young cast: bad sign
Writers: don't do one episode that can be fixed in an hour - three to four episodes and make it excellent.

    last but not least:
Have talented directors that are willing to do stay on for more than one episode.

  20. Playhouse

There's a difference between something that you can watch as a family and a "family show." 'The Avengers' was a movie that you could watch as a family but one could hardly call it a family movie. I'd expect something similar with the S.H.I.E.L.D.
