Marvel's President of Production Discusses Thor and The Avengers

Kevin Feige is the go-to-guy for news about Marvel's film properties, which makes sense, since he is the President of Production at Marvel Studios. Feige recently talked to Empire Online, where he gave an update on the status of two of Marvel's highly anticipated supreheroic epics - Thor and The Avengers.

Thor has been on everyone's lips lately, as rumors about casting have run rampant. Feige wouldn't say anything about who was being looked at for the case, but did give us an idea of when we would hear something. "We will probably be having cast announcements in the next month or so on Thor," Feige said. "We're looking to cast Loki and Odin soon, and the main female role. And we'll also hopefully have lockdown shortly, gearing towards the beginning of production, which will be early next year. So I think there will be a lot of announcements between now and then."

Feige continued, discussing the work that director Kenneth Branah has been doing on the film. "But Branagh's here, we're prepping, and he's put together some spectacular animatics already for our first action scene. We're digging into the second and third now, and we are just embarking on a rewrite of the draft."

So, that's Thor, but how is The Avengers progressing? Feige says that a writer is already on-board, and the script for the film is being looked at. "Zak Penn is already on board The Avengers and he's spending a lot of his time looking into what we're doing with Iron Man 2, Thor and Captain America, seeing how we're tying it all together. And he's beginning to outline the script now - he'll be doing that over the summer."

Feige finished up with an overview of how the Marvel films are being worked on. "All of the Marvel movies leading up to The Avengers will be based in our new facility in Manhattan Beach, in LA. There will be location work that will take us out occasionally, but our home base will always be here."

Thor was released May 6th, 2011 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Natalie Portman, Tom Hiddleston, Anthony Hopkins, Stellan SkarsgÄrd, Kat Dennings, Clark Gregg, Idris Elba. The film is directed by Kenneth Branagh.

Marvel's The Avengers comes to theaters May 4th, 2012 and stars Chris Hemsworth, Scarlett Johansson, Chris Evans, Jeremy Renner, Robert Downey Jr., Cobie Smulders, Tom Hiddleston, Samuel L. Jackson. The film is directed by Joss Whedon.

Captain America: The First Avenger was released July 22nd, 2011 and stars Chris Evans, Hayley Atwell, Sebastian Stan, Tommy Lee Jones, Hugo Weaving, Dominic Cooper, Richard Armitage, Stanley Tucci. The film is directed by Joe Johnston.

despite the array of avengers that are and have been part of the team; the movie should just be a handful, THOR, HULK, IRONMAN & CAPY.
Loading it more will reduce the depth of the story, and also leave the villians without proper screen time.

im thinking AntMan wont even make tha team same goes for wasp i know they were part of the original team but i dont see them making the movie, was'nt blackpanther part of the team? u mentioned hawkeye i can see that, as far as the Hulk i think he will be a threat to the team wich i think will be one part of the Arc of the movie but there will be another villian for them to deal with and that will result to Hulk joing the team, So we have Irom-Man, Captain America,Thor, The Hulk, for some reason i see a girl rounding out the team MS.Marvel maybe or even Spider-Woman?? dam im so pumped for this and its so far away..... anybody else got any ideas of who might be on the team?

A lot of different heroes have joined up withTthe Avengers over the years, but I'm pretty sure its just gonna be the originals; Hulk, Iron Man, Thor, Captain America, Wasp and Ant Man. War Machine will probably lend a hand, and I'm sure we'll see a bit of Hawkeye. I would love to see Vision included as well, and maybe even Falcon. I'm really curious how they are gonna do Ant Man, since hes one of the more ridiculous Marvel characters. Hulk is what I really want to know about. Is he gonna be a threat to The Avengers or is he gonna join the team outright? So many possibilities.

Vladimir Kulich for Thor. Cant understand why people think Thor is lame. You have old school comics and Ultimate series with modern Thor.Plus Norse mythology is awesome. It is endless spring of ideas and you can tie em perfectly with marvel universe, just like some better Thor comics (Simonson).

More Avengers hype than Thor, Thor is kinda lame haha. Sadly, he is one of the main Avengers and I don't know why, considering there are cooler Marvel characters like Wolverine or Spiderman but we know that won't happen. Thor is alright, he is definitely cooler than Aquaman I'll give him that. I'll go see it in the theaters of course because they could actually make Thor amazing for all I know. He has a unique story (which will be the hardest to tie into the other heroes storylines because they are so modern). Unless they make Thor modern I have no idea how it'd work.

How can any of you possibly say that you're NOT looking forward to an Avengers movie? Or Thor. These are some of the greatest Marvel characters ever. I agree, the potential for disaster with Thor is high, but I have plenty of faith in Marvel after Iron Man and The Incredible Hulk. They know what their doing and where they're taking these characters and I don't think were gonna be getting any more Spiderman 3's from Marvel anytime soon. And DarkTower, I dont think you need to worry about any X-Men popping up in your Avengers movie or Iron Man movies, or vice versa, as the rights to each group of characters is owned by different companies. Which sucks because it would be great to see Wolverine fighting alongside Captain America back in WW2. Too bad Marvel f*cked up and sold the rights to arguably their most famous characters to f*cking Fox, who cant seem to pull their heads out of their asses.

darkness300 yes in the early years of thor he is a god but they have since changed slightly. he is not a god but a guy who has the powers of thor and just thinks he is, its stupid but thats how they will prolly do it and it will be good if they keep fox away from it cuz they butchered wolverine!!

I think the Avengers will take the longest which I'm fine with
Thor and Captain America really need some effort and clever writing
Iron Man 2 won't be a problem as long as the cast is directed well

this is the whole thing EMPIRE Magazine was saying, "Comic book movies are no longer a genre, they're an industry"
there's a long line of them and H-Wood is running out of ideas
the fans also contribute to the future of these films

Don't quite understand "handed down to Spielberg". Maybe they should give it to the f*ck up that gave us Wolverine and we'll see where that takes it. What directors do you guys think should oversee Captain America? My second choice for the film would be Nolan.

I second Karl Urban as Thor. If you can play Eomer and Dr. McCoy, you can be the God of Thunder. In an aside, I'm not looking forward to the Avengers. Iron Man and the X-Men movies work as separate film series and it would take many people by surprise if they were all of a sudden lumped together. In the comics it works, but as for movie franchises ... I don't know.

  21. The Narrator: The Better Man

Captain America is my most awaited comic film. I mean if they mess him up on his own movie then Avengers is down the drain. So I hope they cast everyone right. And please I need a good director to do Cap justice. Spielberg wouldn't be bad but he would never do it...

For Captain America, I think that they should get Spielberg. As far as I know, the first film will be set during WWII, and who else would be better at a WWII film than him. I don't believe he's ever done a superhero movie before, so it would be interesting to see how he would bring his creative genius to the project. He would be my dream director for Captain America and I think it would be in great hands.
