Mark Wahlberg Confirms he is Nathan Drake
One enraged fan even accosted Russell as he was exiting a movie theater, crying out all the reasons why the acclaimed director was making a mistake in casting Wahlberg, and why Fillion, who many believe the video game was modeled after, is the only choice for the role. Soon after, claims were made that Mark Wahlberg had never signed onto star in Uncharted: Drake's Fortune, and that there was still hope for Fillion to take the lead.
Well, it looks like David O. Russell could give two shakes what the hardcore Uncharted: Drake's Fortune fanbase thinks. As Mark Wahlberg has come forward to confirm that he is indeed headlining the movie as Nathan Drake, and that both Robert De Niro and Joe Pesci will be appearing along with him.
Here is what Mark Wahlberg had to say:
David O. Russell is writing right now and hopes to direct. It's myself, Joe Pesci and Robert De Niro."
Mark Wahlberg has given some of the best performances of his career working alongside David O. Russell in the films Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, and more recently The Fighter. Russell is a notoriously difficult director to work with, and what the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune fans don't realize is that Nathan Fillion, while he may fit the character, may not be suited to working with David on such an intimate level. Maybe there should be an outcry for a different director instead if the fans really care that much.
Uncharted: Drake's Fortune comes to theaters in 2012 and stars Mark Wahlberg, Robert De Niro, Joe Pesci. The film is directed by David O. Russell.

@shuabert Mark is a hit and miss actor at best. If anything, he plays himself in half the stuff he does and the other half he does a half-way decent job of convincing me he's somewhat talented. Donnie atleast gives his all in every performance he gives, and has a charm and charisma that Mark sorely lacks on screen. His emotes are very "flat" and he's typically just there for eye-candy. Donnie is exactly the opposite - He's less attractive than Mark but makes up for it with personality. But, to each their own. I like Donnie's acting better than Mark's and vice versa for you, we just disagree on how far each of their talents go.
(Sorry for the way late reply, but I hadn't been checking my older notifications)

@lane1 Well I was making a joke. I've seen him in other things, and I still don't think he's even close to the level of Mark.

Seriously, Boomtown, Blue Bloods, Rizzoli & Isles, really memorable 2 minute scene in Sixth Sense... again, I rest my case.

@shuabert - I haven't seen Saw II... but really? You're going to judge the rest of his work, which for the most part is really good, based on ONE performance?
Okay...
Maybe you should try watching him in more than one thing before forming an opinion about him.

@lane1 I saw Donnie Walhberg stink it up in Saw II. That was enough for me.

I am not a Mark Wahlberg hater by any means and he has turned in a few good performances over the years but as i have said before he is NOT Drake. I always thought of Nathan as an every-man who is very vulnerable and believable as a protagonist. Oh well, all i can do now is deal with the facts and cross my fingers.

@lane1 True enough, but then one must ask, why wait til now to speak on it, when you could've riled up the masses when it was fresh? I guess I just like seeing drama :P never mind me :)

But I am not a month late to seeing/reading it. That is all that's important. Whenever I decide to comment on a thread is hardly relevant when you consider that fact. :)

@lane1 Though you are a month late to this party lol, I'm with you on Donnie being the better actor. At least I see some emotion out of him.

Also, I love how many people have defended M. Wahlberg. Have any of you seen his brother Donnie's work? Donnie is a much better actor. While he's only had supporting roles as well, he doesn't need other actors to make his talents come out. No matter what he's doing, his roles ALWAYS stand out. He's had a starring role on 3 TV shows and all of them have been better than a lot of what Mark has done. His brother is the bigger star, yes. Not the better actor. Even Donnie's 2 minute scene in The Sixth Sense was better than half the "leading" stuff Mark has done.

"Mark Wahlberg has given some of the best performances of his career working alongside David O. Russell in the films Three Kings, I Heart Huckabees, and more recently The Fighter."
Yeah, saw Three Kings, don't even remember Mark's performance, never saw Huckabees, and I'm sorry, but Wahlberg's acting in The Fighter was lazy, at best. This is the guy Mark is best working with? Okay...
"Russell is a notoriously difficult director to work with, and what the Uncharted: Drake's Fortune fans don't realize is that Nathan Fillion, while he may fit the character, may not be suited to working with David on such an intimate level."
Yet Mark does it so effortlessly? Puh-leeze. I smell biased article opinion.
On a side note, I hate to say it, but unless they can work around Fillion's schedule, I highly doubt he'd have the time to film such a high-priority project now that he's committed to Castle. Alternatively, I can almost see why he may not have been considered for Green Lantern because of that, as well. Not only is he in his third year of the show now, but he just seems like he's enjoying himself way too much to want to give that up to do "fan favorite" movie roles. I think it's all just a lot of wishful thinking from Firefly fans who want to see him excel in something similar to that role that suits his acting abilities. I do know they could go with ANYone else for this aside from MW, though... Seriously, anyone would be better. And I defintely don't want to see him in it, lol.

@Jimthar Sounds like a nice pipe dream. Too bad the people are largely ignored.

hey lets just hope that wahlberg reads all the posts on these sites and decides to bow out gracefully, leaving them room to cast someone who fits the part better. here's to hoping!

Huh wait what I go into movieweb.com everyday I never saw this till now..... Im a big fan of the Uncharted games I was waiting for some news on the movie.. So Mark Wahlberg eh could of been worse although I think Fillion would have been the right guy for the role I think Wahlberg is ok there could of been alot of better choices theres more actors who could of nailed this part right on but theres also alot woorse than Wahlberg so im not mad hes a pretty good actor depending what role hes in hope he pulls of the sense of humor that Nathan Drake has..... Just gonna throw this out there might not really look like Drake but Ryan Reynolds would of been my pick after Fillion.

@ejk1 watch Invincibile. you'll like it. maybe youll change your opinion about him. and the Italian Job, i get what your saying, but it wasnt some artistic/award winning film so i dont think that really matter about whos in it

This film needs a new director. The game doesn't have drake's family. Tell deniro to make another fockers movie. And please for the love of god leave Joe Pesci out of it. What about sully?? Huh? Who is going to play sully? Are we forgetting about the other main character in the game? As well as Elena? We need a new director one that supports the fan base and will choose fillion over wahlberg or else they just need to call this movie something else other than uncharted.

The cut scenes are much better than some films. Which is actually sad on the part of Hollywood.

That's why I'm fairly settled with the cinematics we get in video games these days, a lot of them already feel movie-ish to begin with. Anybody that has played through PS1's Metal Gear Solid can tell you it is pretty much a cinematic experience, and what a f*cking awesome one. I don't even need a movie for that game, I can just play the game again and am totally satisfied.

Dude, I don't think we will ever see a truly satisfying vid game adaptation because of the loss of interaction the games possess. I'll probably think this way until I am proven wrong, but so far nothing on the horizon seems likely to change my attitude.

Yeah, that's taking things way too far, though. Not liking a movie's casting choice is one thing, but getting in Russell's face over it, as if it's going to affect anyone's life seriously, is stupid and ignorant.
No matter what happens, I'll live. I just know what I'd like to see. It's as you say, though, even if the movie blows, we still have the more then excellent games to play in an expanding series.

True. But I am concerned about people accosting Russell. Didn't we just commemorate the death of John Lennon? I don't want to hear or read about some director or actor getting harassed or worse by some dumbass over a video game adaptation.

Let's forget about who's done what or been around whom. Anyone that has played the games (I have, I own both) will tell you Fillion embodies everything about Drake. It doesn't matter what his past credentials are, or what Wahlberg's are, it's about who fits the bill the most, and it's a no brainer at that point.

I haven't seen Invincible yet, at least not all of it. As for The Italian Job, it's the same as the others. Charlize Theron is an Oscar winner, Edward Norton is, well, Edward Norton, and Donald Sutherland provided veteran experience.

@ejk1 i get what your saying. yeah, max payne might not have been the greatest movie ever, or The Happening. but the guy has a lot of talent. I thought Invincible was another good one of his and there wasnt really any huge A-listers in that to help him out. everyone enjoys a good inspirational movie every now and then. i even liked him in the Italian Job. yeah i know its no Godfather or Oscar material, but that movie and some others he's done, like Shooter or The Other Guys, are just good to sit back, eat a little popcorn, and enjoy the movie. plus he's accomplished way more then Fillion. with all his movies and him producing some great shows like Entourage
