USA Weekend chatted with British actor Mark Strong (Sherlock Holmes, Kick-Ass and Robin Hood) who discussed his role in Warner Bros. Pictures' Green Lantern, where he portrayed Sinestro.

For anybody who's familiar with the Green Lantern and the origin story, the film closely follows the early comics. Sinestro starts out as Hal Jordan's mentor, slightly suspicious and not sure of him because obviously Hal is the first human being who's made into a Green Lantern. He's certainly very strict and certainly unsure of the wisdom of Hal becoming a Green Lantern," Strong says. "He is a military guy but isn't immediately bad. It's the kind of person he is that lends himself to becoming bad over the course of the comics being written, but initially he's quite a heroic figure."

Sinestro first appeared in DC Comics' Green Lantern series in 1961, and Strong confirms that the outfit and other aspects of the character very closely follow the character's early days.

"That widow's peak and thin mustache was for some reason originally based on David Niven, and Hal Jordan was based on Errol Flynn," says Strong, who recently got fitted for special Sinestro contact lenses. "In the '30s and '40s, they shared an apartment together in Hollywood when they were making movies and they were great friends. Obviously at the time, whoever was doing the original comics must have looked at them as guys doing very well in the film industry, and based those characters on them. So I would like to do justice to the Sinestro that was conceived for the comic books."

Green Lantern was released June 17th, 2011 and stars Ryan Reynolds, Blake Lively, Peter Sarsgaard, Mark Strong, Temuera Morrison, Jenna Craig, Jon Tenney, Mike Doyle. The film is directed by Martin Campbell.

This makes me believe in this movie even more. The fact that he knows his sh*t is either because he has done his research or because he is a fan of the comics. Doesn't matter which, because both are the important things that make movies really good. I have alot of faith in this movie. I haven't seen Strong in a single bad movie. I mean come on, Sherlock Holmes and Kick Ass? This movie is going to be amazing.

Mark Strong and Chris Evans have each given interviews about their respective roles this week, and are at totally opposite ends of the source knowledge. Yet I respect both men equally-Strong for knowing the history, and Evans for being honest about not being a comic book fan.

so this is all from Mark Strong the actor playing Sinestro, not like a comic industry historian or something, cuz the guy seems to know his sh*t. makes me respect the hell out of Mark Strong cuz he either A) is a huge Green Lantern fan or B) did a helluva lot of research, either of which is pretty awesome.

reading this gives me alot of faith in this movie.
