Mark Millar Talks About His Proposed Superman Epic Pitch

Mark Millar has made a name for himself in the graphic novel world, but now he wants to put his stamp on the movie world in a very big way, with a reboot of Superman. Empire recently talked to Millar, who created the graphic novels that Wanted and the forthcoming Kick-Ass are based on, has been pitching huge Superman reboot.

Millar revealed that his version would be an 8-hour, three-film series, with the films to be released in consecutive years. He is apparently working with a "big Hollywood action director" who he will not reveal at this time, and he calls this new take, "the Magnum Opus of Superman stories."

"It's gonna be like Michael Corleone in The Godfather films, the entire story from beginning to end, you see where he starts, how he becomes who he becomes, and where that takes him. The Dark Knight showed you can take a comic book property and make a serious film, and I think the studios are ready to listen to bigger ideas now."

Millar got into more detail, adding, "I want to start on Krypton, a thousand years ago, and end with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers."

We'll be sure to keep you posted on any developments in Millar's Superman pitch.

Mmmm bad to bad for a history. Superman is dead.

I'd say that Danny Boyle is probably my favourite to adapt a Millar script. James Cameron would be third, but I'm not sure who fits in second...

Sounds like a great story but I dont think the studios will ever go for it completely, I dont see them willing to leave superman alone to die. Theyd probably wine because theres no room for a prequel because theyre starting so far back and no sequel cause superman would be dead

You know, Bryan Singer really muffed the whole Superman thing. I mean, it was cool back in the late 70s, early 80s. But with kick ass movies like X-Men, Spider-Man, and Batman, to do a cutting-edge Superman you better come up with some untouched or fresh ideas. Since the last Superman was a turd, who the hell will be inspired to see another one? And the whole Lex Luthor villain thing with the Kryptonite - borrrrrrrriiiing

  6. The Narrator: The Better Man

I really want JAckson who is great at interpreting books correctly, if not, Abrams would be cool.
Cameron was a choice others thought of first, but I just agreed with them.

Still, aren't they using Singer anymore. I hear nobody has mentioned him on this thread.

I mean he didn't do to bad on it. I thought it was good, just slow.

@Fallen, the idea of James Cameron was one that completely eluded me. But that would be a brilliant idea if Peter Jackson wasn't up for it. J.J. Abrams as well, neither one of them crossed my mind initially, but now that I think of it, those are some stellar options.

I am not a fan of the whole superman thing but this looks like it could be interesting everyone here has mention great hollywood directors but i could i would like to see Zack Snyder or maybe Timur Bekmambetov i know hes not a hollywood director but he did a pretty good job with Wanted maybe even Guillermo Del Toro

I never liked the 'Man in Tights' but this actually sounds like it could be really good.

"End with Superman alone on Planet Earth, the last being left on the planet, as the yellow sun turns red and starts to supernova, and he loses his powers." That's bad ass, and if they do this right, it could be awesome.

Directors? After all I've read, I'd definitely love to see Peter Jackson (but another trilogy - would he do it; he didn't want to do The Hobbit). James Cameron needs to come back, and I don't think Avator's going to be that come back. This might be it. Steven Spielburg? He's one of my favorite directors; but I just don't see it.

    Sounds good either way...

I really hope that Warner Bros. isn't stupid enough to actually listen to this guy. It would be a travesty if this piece of sh*t idea comes to the big screen.

  12. The Narrator: The Better Man

Sorry Anarchrist for the misunderstanding. But I still think that Jackson might be interested. I mean W.E.T.A. can totally pull off the graphics and suit and everything.
If not, I think either Cameron or Abrams should direct.

    omg omg omg
    coast2coast, I hadn't even thought of that!
    Danny Boyle would be awesome...
But he's not a big Hollywood action director...
but I'd really like it if it was him!

The pitch for these movies sounds amazing. I'd have to go with Cameron as my top choice, then Snyder or Bay.

  18. The Anarchist

@Fallen, only the 4 above are the ones I don't want to see. I just don't think Snyder could pull it off. My personal favourite would have to be Jackson. He's known for making epic-scale movies and you just know the critics are going to love it. Too bad he's stuck on The Hobbit (which I desperately want to see). And Bay is known for not being able to handle a decent love story in his movies. Oh, and I'm also up for Cameron! He could really pull this off.

Nolan isn't right for this, I don't think. They could honestly bring Singer back if he would read some damn comic books instead of using the Richard Donner movies as his background. I also think that, if he would quit bitching about superman and do it the way he wants, Kevin Smith could make this...although it might lose some of its epic appeal that way.

I actually think the best open suggestion I've heard is James Cameron. If he sticks closely to millar's script and hires capable actors, he could do all right.

But, my favorite for this one would probably be JJ Abrams. As much as I hate LOST, the man has a talent for all things nerdy; making them original while sticking to the source material is a feat we have yet to see from him though, so we'll see what happens with Star Trek.

  22. The Narrator: The Better Man

Nominations for director, P.J, Snyder, Cameron, or maybe there is the slightest chance of Lucas if only he would stop with the dumb corny jokes. Definitely not Ratner, or Uwe Boll.
Maybe J.J. Abrams. i mean I loved the way he directed MI3.

Antichrist, are you serious. You rate out Snyder due to some changes and then you hate Pete Jackson, the mastermind of LOTR? And Bay? You're a f*cking idiot!!!!!!

  24. The Narrator: The Better Man

THis sounds sick. i mean alone dying. That's just great. i can't wait for this. He did good with Wanted, Smallville, and the Ultimate's, am glad he's doing this.

    WHO'S THE DIRECTOR!?!?!?!?!

    3 years agoby @narratorFlag

  25. Mieko_Siede

That does sound interesting. I really don't know what to say to that except I'm with everything minus the end of the world theme. You can't really find an end to Superman when the comics still press on. But things spin and stranger things have been known to happen. I'm completely looking forward to this reboot.

Peter Jackson may have the vision needed to pull this out. Paul Greengrass and Wolfgang Peterson would make great choices, but I'm for Jackson. Going back to Lord of the Rings, this could be his kind of epic. I take a complete pass on George Lucas, but Steven Spielberg...Hmmmm
