Marc Webb is the front-runner to direct the Spider-Man reboot
The site is reporting that Webb had already met with Sony execs about the film, which they hope to start production on later this year for a summer 2012 release, in 3-D. It was said that the studio had directors such as James Cameron, David Fincher and Wes Anderson on their wish list, and now it seems Webb is at the top of that list. Here's an excerpt from the article.
What has Sony execs excited is the fact that (500) Days of Summer introduced a director with a grasp of how to depict the way young people think and feel. This is critical because the Jamie Vanderbilt script covers the formative years of a high school-aged Peter Parker, and that POV is as important as the action sequences.
Spider-man 4 is in development .
The Amazing Spider-Man comes to theaters July 3rd, 2012 and stars Andrew Garfield, Emma Stone, Rhys Ifans, Martin Sheen, Denis Leary, Chris Zylka, Irrfan Khan, C. Thomas Howell. The film is directed by Marc Webb.

Why cancel "Spider-Man 4" and start a reboot with a new director and cast? No! I think Sam Raimi should CONTINUE with the trilogy and not cancel it! The 3 "Spider-Man" movies are great so far and I think they should be continued on! I'm already disappointed with this new reboot and director idea!

Any of the directors you guys are fighting over would be good, since each one has their own hits and classics. Sony will try to get the best of both worlds, somebody who will bend to their will if they need to, and somebody who is gonna make them money. Unless these guys over at Sony are trying the "it works" tactic by doing what the fans what and hiring somebody who knows us better than they do. To me, that'd be the smartest move, cause we are the ones who goto the film and put those millions of dollars in their bank accounts lol.

@Username. That's an interesting point you make about the Brock & Parker relationship, but wouldn't that be going down the Ultimate path? I think, if that were to occur, it should maintain the bullying coming from Flash. With Brock on the other hand, he should be introduced as an employee at the Daily Bugle once Parker gets his photography gig and have the resentment established because of Parker's "popularity".
I've always disliked the idea of the "original" trilogy being centered on Mary Jane... quite annoying. I'm all for your selection of villains primarily because we won't get to see Dylan Baker become Lizard.

That's what I think would make a good set up for the reboot in terms of introducing the supporting cast, but I'd like to add another thing: Dr. Connors could be Peter's science teacher, his role model. It would be a great way to introduce Lizard as the main villain for the first movie...having Peter's first foe be his role model could prove to be a huge trial in his journey as a hero.
As for the cast, I already mentioned Anton Yelchin as Peter. I think John C. McGinley would make a great Norman Osborn(with his hair buzzed, of course). That's all I've got so far.

Spidey's supporting cast needs to be strong. Gwen Stacy, MJ, Aunt May, Norman/Harry Osborn, Eddie Brock, Jameson...these characters need to be introduced ahead of time instead of just randomly being brought in at the last minute(i.e. Brock and Stacy in part 3).
I like Anton Yelchin as Peter. It would be nice to see Peter and Gwen dating at the start of the movie, both the "nerds" of the class. MJ can be the opposite to Gwen(at least on the outside), a flirtatious and popular girl dating Eddie Brock(I know this never happened, but I think it would be a good way to introduce Brock early on as the Flash Thompson-like character who bullies Parker, setting up their rivalry before the whole Symbiote thing)...but on the inside, she wants something better. That's where the love triangle can come in, that's where the confrontation between Brock and Peter can reach a high. Harry Osborn is Peter's best friend, not your usual jock. He protects Peter and sticks by him(sort of like young Reed and Ben's relationship at the start of Ultimate FF). That's where Norman comes in, but I think it's important they keep away from the Green Goblin story for the first one...just hint at it.
As for villains, I'm craving Lizard, Electro, or Mysterio. I think they could work well on screen.

At the moment Iron man is safe until after the third or fourth film. The studio heads will start to tell Jon who's going in and what not, until then I'll treasure the ones that we have at the moment.
Jon is awesome and so is Sam, I would laugh if both switched up on franchises.
Jon directing Spiderman would be totally awesome in so many ways, and Raimi on Iron man would be like the best thing ever. This would bold better for me instead of having other directors that have no clue.

Didnt realy like the idea of a reboot, 1&2 where awsome they shud of let rami make the 4th one with the vulture pesonally i think havin spider man fighting john malkovich as vulture flying around new york wud hav looked AWSOME RIGHT ? rami knows what hes doing he knows the material very well and if they neva butted in saying we dont want vulture and tht the audience wants venom number 3 wudent of turnd out so bad think about it sam rami wanted to make SM3 with sand man, vulture, and new goblin if they neva presured him to add venom in the movie evrything people hated about the third one wudent be in the movie the emo peter parker, the saturday night fever walk, jazz club scene, and fast pasted packed movie. i fort the third one was fun to watch but never met the same standards as the first two im sure this reboot will be gd but EVERY MARVEL FILM GETS REMADE the hulk did, daredevil is, fantastic four is and now spiderman is thank god they did iron man right.

I AM FRATSON
I wanna see Fitchner or Matthew Vaughn to direct.
As for spidey, Joseph Gordon Levitt has my vote.
MJ - Rachel McAdams, Evan Rachel Wood, or Nina Dobrev
As for villians, Ill cross that bridge at a later time.

I can't see Spiderman being gritty or dark, he's better in a light hearted tone. Studios are making this worse, they should have kept Raimi. I truly don't care if he wants Vulture or not, bring Raimi back.

ok - so now Spider-Man 4: Redux is a dark, edgy, story-driven, 3-D Indie flick?!?!?!?!?! wow.
i'm all about a story driven movie, but not sure i want to watch it in 3-D. why not do what nolan did and take it to the next level? use IMAX cameras for a richer backdrop, but use it in more sequences.

Funny how last year Nolan did such a great job with TDK that everyone wanted him to direct more comic-movies. And before that, everyone wanted Jackson to do stuff because LOTR was so great. Now that Cameron is back making blockbusters, people want HIM to do comic-movies now.
Guys. Chill! :P

3D worst you've heard? Spiderman was made for a 3D movie, and if Cameron would consider doing it it would be the greatest spiderman movie ever.
