Marc Webb, the director of the Golden Globe-nominated Best Picture (500) Days of Summer, will direct the next chapter in the Spider-Man franchise, set to hit theaters summer 2012, it was jointly announced today by Columbia Pictures and Marvel Studios.
Written by James Vanderbilt, Webb will work closely with producers Avi Arad and Laura Ziskin in developing the project, which will begin production later this year.
Commenting on the announcement, Amy Pascal, co-chairman of Sony Pictures Entertainment, and Matt Tolmach, president of Columbia Pictures, said, "At its core, Spider-Man is a small, intimate human story about an everyday teenager that takes place in an epic super-human world. The key for us as we sought a new director was to identify filmmakers who could give sharp focus to Peter Parker's life. We wanted someone who could capture the awe of being in Peter's shoes so the audience could experience his sense of discovery while giving real heart to the emotion, anxiety, and recklessness of that age and coupling all of that with the adrenaline of Spider-Man's adventure. We believe Marc Webb is the perfect choice to bring us on that journey."
Arad and Ziskin added jointly, "Over the years, the Spider-Man comics have been told with bold and creative new writers and artists who have re-calibrated the way audiences see Peter Parker. Marc Webb will do for the new direction of the films what so many visionary storytellers have done with the comic books. He is an incredibly talented filmmaker and we look forward to working closely with him on this new adventure."
Webb said, "This is a dream come true and I couldn't be more aware of the challenge, responsibility, or opportunity. Sam Raimi's virtuoso rendering of Spider-Man is a humbling precedent to follow and build upon. The first three films are beloved for good reason. But I think the Spider-Man mythology transcends not only generations but directors as well. I am signing on not to 'take over' from Sam. That would be impossible. Not to mention arrogant. I'm here because there's an opportunity for ideas, stories, and histories that will add a new dimension, canvas, and creative voice to Spider-Man."
Stan Lee, co-creator of Spider-Man, added, "I'm excited that Sony has chosen a director with a real penchant and understanding for the character. This is a brave, bold direction for the franchise, and I can't wait to see what Marc comes up with next."
Added Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige, "The idea of re-imagining the on-screen story for one of the world's most iconic superheros is sure to deliver an exciting new dimension to Spider-Man fans everywhere. There are volumes of comics and material available to inspire fresh and compelling takes on Peter Parker and his journey as Spidey and we look forward to seeing this come alive onscreen."
Marc Webb has won acclaim with his film debut (500) Days of Summer. He has several MTV VMAs including 2009's Best Director award for Green Day's "21 Guns," 2006 Best Rock Video for AFI's "Miss Murder," and Best Group Video for The All-American Rejects' "Move Along." The Music Video Production Association honored him in 2006 as the Director of the Year for his work with Weezer, AAR, and My Chemical Romance.
In addition to two Golden Globe nominations including Best Picture (musical or comedy), his first feature film, (500) Days of Summer, starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanel, has been nominated for three Independent Spirit Awards, including Best Feature. Webb was also awarded the Spotlight Award, which honors outstanding directorial debuts, by the National Board of Review.

Chad, spot on about the cheap director factor.
I just feel this will be an 'all-studio' picture with no real influence from a director. That is NEVER a good thing.
There must be balance of opinion of directors/writers/producers when film making. of course one vision works as well, but to have system of checks it's always smart. One needs to have intelligent creative eyes to run ideas by before giving the go ahead.
(STARWARS EPISODE 1 was a perfect example of this, but i digress)
i have a bad feeling about this, but i'm being too negative too soon.

Illuminati I think that's about 20% of the reason, another 20% because he's inexpensive (no name yet), and then the remaining 60% to the target audience and story. :)

do you guys REALLY believe that they got this guy cause of his brilliant directorial skills???
Let's look at it this way. Given he is decent, but the key reason is without a doubt is his ability to 'roll over and play nice'.
The studios are NOT going deal with director with too much 'creativity' again. Given i had big problems with SPIDEY 3 & not a fan of SPIDEY 1, Rami on his own does have a vision and is a good director. But with all the issues/fights he had with the studios, they learned their lesson.

I'm sure this director will be fine. I'm more concerned with how the reboot will handle the green goblin. I have a feeling that they won't want to tackle this villain again since he was done in the first series. However, Gobby was a pivotal part of the spiderman story, and is one of his most well known villains. We'll just have to see.

im all for this guy. no reason not to back him right now. fallen and vital, among many others, have said it best, give the guy a chance. 500 days was a rly good movie, and the bands he has worked with are great. talk all the sh*t you want, but the studio is not going to bring in some douche to reboot the franchise. plain and simple. they want this guy for the next few movies. good luck mr webb.

Being mad at this guy is like being mad that Peter Jackson when he wanted that Neil B. (I can't spell his last name lol) to direct the Halo movie back when they were trying to do that, instead they obviously did District 9, which did well and got Neil some respect, and that guy was a nobody before Jackson brought him into the light ya know? I have a feeling it could be the same for this Marc Webb.
Why are you guys talking about The Hulk lol?

HULK'03 even with it's flaws was a classic & one of Ang Lee's best. I will say no more about it.
Marc Webb. I will give him a chance, but it's not like he had an amazing first film. PI(Arronofsky)/RESERVOIR DOGS(Tarantino)/6TH SENSE(Shymalan)/MEMENTO(Nolan)/ ALIEN 3(Fincher) had remarkable debut directors.
It's not safe to give an amatuer director a franchise with the magnitude of SPIDEY. Other than having a good romantic film, I feel the main reason they picked webb; he will 'bend' to the will of his 'corporate' masters without much of a fight (unlike the people i listed).

On a side note, Webb has directed some awesome music videos for a batch of great bands: Weezer and Incubus (gods), and Green Day, AFI, The Used.

apparently marvel and a lot of the general public disagreed with you, the hulk got its reboot right away..but honestly do we need a spidey reboot? if its teen angst ya want watch the sparkley vamps of twilight..this is a superhero movie...not a teen drama

I agree fallen, everyone needs a chance, and that is a chance that sony is willing to take. I think it was even shown that a music video director, namely david fincher has proven that he can make films, and be a fine director of film, and not just videos. So i dont hold that against webb... and although i did not see (500) days of summer, knowing the premise of that film, and sony feeling that tone fits with a reboot of spidey, i can see why they are going with a new director. my thoughts are that even after it comes out it will only be 10 years since the first spider man happened. it took alot longer for batman, and even longer for superman, and less time with the hulk. batman was well recieved because it was a reboot, however supes was not, being a continuation so to speak with the original two films. Although i feel like there were still places to go with the proposed spidey sequels, and would have ultimately been cash cows for sony, i think they stand on their own as good films. shoot me... i liked them, for good and for worse. As far as the ultimate direction, i am not sure i really am pleased with this direction, but in 2 years and 4 months we will find out if sony's decision was a pay off, or pay flop, not so much in terms of money, but in fans reaction.

Josh, my point was that he started off with such HUGE stars when he was unknown. Mac Webb at ;least has 1 good movie under his belt. So give him a chance. Thats my main point. Everyone started somewhere.

Ang Lee's HULK didn't suck. Certainly not any more than Leterrier's did. At least Ang Lee made me care about what was happening to the character.

this is money grab pure and simple.they get a bunch of people to work for scale and throw money inat it for budget after they got rid of every one else...that was getting what? too much money for it..this is gonna bite them in the ass, isnt it to early for a reboot? ang lees ..the hulk was diffrent because well it just sucked..if i spiderman wasnt broke..why fix it?
