Sony Pictures Animation acquires Manimal
Glen A. Larson, who created the original series, is attached as a producer for this new live-action/CGI hybrid. Simon MacCorkindale and Melody Anderson starred in the show revolving around Jonathan Chase, an affluent doctor who morphed into animals and helped police solve crimes. The campy series, which debuted against TV powerhouse Dallas, was a critical and commercial failure. NBC pulled the plug after just eight episodes, although it developed a cult following in later years.
This will not be the first time that Sony Pictures Animation has turned to the 80s for a new feature. The studio struck box office gold with The Smurfs, taking in over $560 million worldwide. Sony is currently in post-production on the sequel, The Smurfs 2, set for release next July. We also reported in August that SPA is developing a movie version of ALF.
