The Dark Knight screenwriter David S. Goyer recently participated in a Q&A about his upcoming Starz series Da Vinci's Demons, and he took a few moments out to talk about writing next summer's big superhero tentpole picture Man of Steel, which is reviving the Superman mythos for a new generation of fans.

Mostly, he talked about how the film will stay true to The Dark Knight's naturalism.

"The work we did was to bring the same naturalism as the Batman trilogy. Our approach has always been a naturalist, realistic, approach. We always try to imagine these stories as if they could happen in the same world in which we live. It is not an easy thing with Superman, and this does not necessarily mean that it will be a dark film. But in working on this reboot, we are thinking about what would happen if a story like this really happened. How would people react? What consequences would there be? What I like to do are stories set in "genres", parts of "gender", which, however, are not cartoons, or comics. I did the same thing with Da Vinci's Demons, and I did the same with Man of Steel.

Let's say that every time I work on a piece of fiction, whether it's Superman, Call of Duty, Da Vinci's Demons, I try to understand what issues are going on in the world, and I try to reflect on that, in all of my current projects. That said, when we wrote The Dark Knight, the Occupy movement was not there yet. Let's say that we have "predicted" that there would be very popular discontent, and we thought it would be a good opportunity to generate additional reflections related to this story. Working on relevant elements from the point of view of society can only make things more interesting ...

In the pantheon of superheroes, Superman is the most recognized and revered character of all time. Clark Kent / Kal-El is a young man in his twenties who feels alienated by powers beyond his imagination. Transported long ago on Earth from Krypton, a planet technologically advanced and distant, the young Clark is gripped by the question, "Why are we finished here?" Shaped by the values of his adoptive parents Martha and Jonathan Kent, Clark discovers that he has the extraordinary ability to take on difficult decisions. And when the world is in dire need of stability, there arose a threat even greater. Clark must become the Man of Steel to protect the people he loves and to stand as a savior of mankind."

Man of Steel was released June 14th, 2013 and stars Henry Cavill, Amy Adams, Michael Shannon, Diane Lane, Russell Crowe, Antje Traue, Harry Lennix, Richard Schiff. The film is directed by Zack Snyder.

I'm sorry, and don't expect any response from me tomorrow because I literally have my day planned around something else, but I have to say this: Goyer didn't say a goddamned thing in this story. He just glossed over what any intelligent person would already know about what to expect from his and the Nolan brothers's involvement in any story. He was doing press for his TV show, and was asked about a movie he wrote the original screenplay for, and gave an answer that amounted to...what? "The naturalistic approach?" Seriously? Pretty sure the first Superman was a good take on how some people would react: curiosity, fear, awe, etc. These things were there in the first film, so why shouldn't they be in this film? You're free to sit there and eat up all Goyer's empty words, but until I see the final product, I'm keeping a level head.

David Goyer taking time out of his busy day to comment on Man of Steel?! Some people said you had left the project to only focus on Godzilla! Its good to see that you still care about MOS and your story will see the light of day. I like the idea of it having a more natural and realistic approach. It will still be fantasy and very comic book like, but with other Superman movies it was too unrealistic in how they treated him. they acted like it was normal to see a man fly and have super powers. No one ever acted scared or shocked. they just accepted him at first sight.

I like how he calls it naturalistic, in addition to realistic. I think that's a better way of describing Nolan's films: it's still a fantasy world, but it feels very natural and not out-of-the-norm, so that when something happens that wouldn't happen in the real world, it doesn't stick out. I think this is a good way to take the Superman film as well, as long as they don't change him to some biological experiment instead of the Last Son of Krypton (and in this universe, let's keep it that way).

WHEN THE WORLD NEEDS A SUPERMAN- I feel that the this naturalism approach is an excellent idea because even in fiction there needs to be stability for viewers to be brought in. Superman Returns is just a repetition of Richard Donner's adaptation. Superman Return hardly provided anything exciting and is nothing compare to Donner's great work. I believe this movie will be better than Returns!

  27. The Real Goku

Honestly I'm not excited for this movie. I see it being like all reboots. An hour and a half or origin and story. Last 30 minutes action. I guarantee it. We all know the story of superman. I hope we get tons of action in the movie. But I doubt it. We shall see

  29. Tha Phoenix

It seems that they've addressed every point I brought up a couple of years back about 'Superman Returns' failing in part because the general public simply doesn't relate to a seemingly infallible hero anymore (and I know that he has Kryptonite and various other weaknesses, but when compared to other superheroes, he seems practically invulnerable - bulletproof, super strong, can fly etc).

By making his more 'human' struggles evident on screen, people will feel they can relate to him more (this has worked for Batman, as well as the gritty realism and naturalism). He'll still have all the powers and qualities we've always loved about him, but he'll probably also have his human side (that came with being brought up by the Kents) made more clear and more flawed.

I can see this movie being far more successful than SR, if only for those reasons.

    But I could be wrong...
