Maggie Gyllenhaal Spills on The Dark Knight's Rachel Dawes

The Metro UK recently sat down with Maggie Gyllenhaal for one of their famous Sixty Second interviews. During the chat, she spilled a little bit about her upcoming The Dark Knight character Rachel Dawes.

When they asked if her character was a "damsel in distress", Gyllenhaal replied by saying:

There are moments of that. Chris Nolan, the director, would joke about how I had to resign myself to being a little bit of a damsel in distress but he pushed me in other ways to make her a powerful character. I play a lawyer and have real relationships with the people I'm interacting with in the movie. She's very smart and a real rounded person. Of course, if you're the girl in Batman, you're going to be a damsel in distress to some extent but she's a really great character. So many people I play are a mess; Rachel's really clear about what's important to her and unwilling to compromise her morals, which made a nice change.

The Dark Knight opens July 18th, 2008.

The Dark Knight was released July 18th, 2008 and stars Christian Bale, Heath Ledger, Aaron Eckhart, Michael Caine, Maggie Gyllenhaal, Gary Oldman, Morgan Freeman, Monique Gabriela Curnen. The film is directed by Christopher Nolan.

yeah she is a phenominal actress. I have liked all the roles i have ever seen her play. i was excited when she was casted as Rachel. I agree that katie isnt a very good actress. the only film i can really give her any kind of compliment would have to be Thank You For Smoking. everything else she has done all the way back to her days in Dawsons Creek i was never impressed.

I agree Joker, I wasn't impressed with Katie Holmes and I actually considere dher to be teh only weak link in an otherwise flawless film. I just don't rate "Mrs Cruise" as an actress. I thought some of the way she did her lines were a bit lame and cheesy. I'm sure Maggie will do a good job and from the the small buts Ive seen it looks like she will - and anyway she's better lookin! Go Bale you lucky bastard!

  3. THE JOKER

i didnt like Katie Holmes role in the film. You could telkl she wasnt intended to be just a mistress in distriss...but she portrayed herself that way anytime anything came near her minus the encounter with the two men on the train.

  5. THE JOKER

Maggie is a perfect choice for this role. Katie Holmes did not do the role justice at all. I can not wait for this to finally come out. And i highly agree with you Yahzee. If Zimmer's name is on the score you know you have nothing to worry about coming from the music side of things, Along with Newton Howard of course

Maggie's Rachel Dawes seems like she can take care of herself, unlike Holmes, who was kinda the damsel in distress. See when she hits the Joker in the trailer! This movie's gonna rock.

Im happy too about Maggie Gyllenhaal taking over the role. Now lets hope Hans Zimmer and James Newton Howard make a extraordinary score this time and the only things that could have been improved in Begins will be perfect in The Dark Knight
