According to The Hollywood Reporter, Lionsgate's Madea's Family Reunion, a PG-13-rated comedy based on the play by Tyler Perry, dominated the boxoffice for the weekend with an estimated debut of a sterling $30.3 million. Madea averaged a robust $13,810 per theater from 2,194 venues and the opening proved significant for both Perry and Lionsgate. The debut for the Perry-helmed Madea marked the biggest so far this year and was the second-largest bow in Lionsgate history after Saw II ($31.7 million). It also was about $8.4 million better than the opening for Perry's first film, last year's Diary of a Mad Black Woman, and was the third No. 1 bow from the indie distributor in the past four months. Interest in family-friendly films remained strong at the boxoffice as Buena Vista Pictures' Eight Below, Sony Pictures' The Pink Panther and Universal Pictures' Curious George remained in the top five this weekend.

Lack of a dominant U.S. blockbuster plus a scattershot pattern of Oscar-related and competing middle-profile titles muted the international boxoffice this weekend, with Warner Bros.' Syriana claiming the No. 1 spot for a U.S. title by garnering an estimated $5.9 million from more than 1,300 screens in 20 markets. The biggest boxoffice smash overseas continues to be Warner Bros. Pictures' release in France of Les Bronzes 3: Amis Pour La Vie (The Suntanned Ones: Friends for Life), which dominated the market for the fourth weekend in a row, making it one of France's top 10 boxoffice hits ever. The film earned an estimated $8.1 million with 1.1 million admissions from 950 screens, generating a mighty $68.4 million market total to date. Warners broadened its international rollout of Syriana by 10 new territories, raising its international boxoffice total in its second weekend to an estimated $9.5 million.
