Mad Max 4: Fury Road Shooting in Australia with Sam Worthington

The Daily Telegraph has reported that George Miller's Mad Max 4: Fury Road is set to start shooting in Sydney, Australia as well as in the Outback NSW. While it hasn't been officially confirmed, Terminator Salvation star Sam Worthington is said to be starring in the film alongside the recently rumored Charlize Theron.

Pre-production is said to begin immediately, with 30 weeks of filming to be completed in Broken Hill starting June of 2010. The project is said to take two-and-a-half years to complete, and it will create thousands of jobs for Australian locals. As reported, Australian Premier Nathan Rees made it a priority to get the film to shoot in his country after losing Green Lantern, which was "an unexpected blow to the local industry."

Director George Miller, the man behind the original trilogy, stated, ""Hollywood has cut its production in half. Big movies like Mad Max 4: Fury Road and Happy Feet are rare and competitively sought after in all the filmmaking regions of the world. The production agreements have been a long time in the making and Premier Rees and his team have worked like Trojans to ensure this substantial investment comes into this country. Not only does it help fuel the local economy but it means many talented people get a chance to practice their craft and lift their skills."

Mad Max 4: Fury Road will most likely see theater screens in the summer of 2012.

Mad Max: Fury Road is in development and stars Nicholas Hoult, Zoƫ Kravitz, Tom Hardy, Teresa Palmer, Charlize Theron, Adelaide Clemens, Riley Keough. The film is directed by George Miller.

Not necessary, Mel could play an older version of Max which is telling his family an adventure he had when he was much younger.
If it is a prequel than whats the point to it, unless it's between films.
This is the only way I can see it happening.

Right can i clarify something up for you guys...

I was watching Film 2009 with Ross, the speculation is that Sam will play the lead role, which is Mel Gibson's role, and that Tom Hardy will be the villain, in which he is of Austrailian descendent, despite the fact that he was born and raised in England, he is still an aussie at heart and by blood.

Also to duly note, Miller confirmed the film is a prequel, so yeah the people bitching about Gibson, he aint needed technically, because he is too old to playing the character so they need someone young to play the road warrior in his early days

John2347, we were all 13 yrs old once too, but I don't see the Jewish populace in Hollywoodland demanding that sick f*ck Polanski be held accountable for his actions in raping a child. Roman's genious/artistic ability gave him a get out of jail free card for 30 f*cken years, so case in point...Get over yourself.

Tom Hardy is not an Aussie. He was born in Hammersmith, England, UK.

What do you mean no one else can come close to playing it? I mean sam is a great pic, and my front runner, but he is not the only one Vanboy. J.A. is right this is all rumors. cool rumors, but speculation none the less until confirmed.

And no one can replace Mel, but maybe and HOPEFULLy (seeing as how the casting is going young) this will be before he becomes Mad Max, but thats a bit like the original Mad Max...in my opinion the best (crazy story wise). Overall this will be interesting either way.

The name: a bit lame. Just call it a mad max remake of the original. Not a remake of the Road Warrior or fans will really get pissed (like me).

Oh, and Thunderdome was not that bad Vanboy. It was fun/entertaining and a fan favorite if you know people. tina Turner was a cool baddy.

Vanboy, you should check out this link as well as Ottley's. All these names are in the running, and no one has been selected or attached. Movieweb likes to jump the gun and make rumors into facts just so they can get hits on there articles and get money for the Ads. Apparently Mel is still in the running according to the article I put the link for.

Vanboy...My reference to Bond and Ryan was in the same context as yours...it works for those series because the character calls for change based on the generation they are set to. Those series unlike Rambo, Rocky or in this case Max, can interchange actors based on the fanbase and what their tastes are...such was the case with the new Bond installments that featured Kreig...the audiance wanted a re-launch...a knock down drag out ass kicking Bond with attitude, and so they got it. With characters like Mad Max, there is no unexplored version of their characters that you can insert a new actor to protray...that character along with Rambo and Rocky were molded, struck and cast by the actors that portrayed them. Case in point...no Mel...no f*cking way. BTW, yeah the guys a couple french fries short a Happy Meal, but WTF? Van Gogh cut his f*cking ear off, we still hold his work up pretty high.

Ottley, How do you read this- "While it hasn't been officially confirmed, Terminator Salvation star Sam Worthington is said to be starring in the film alongside the recently rumored Charlize Theron."

True nothing says Worthington will play the title role as yay gushes, but it does strongly imply that Worthington is attached, along with Theron. I mean, if Mel is not in it, nobody else could com close to pulling this off than Worthington.

But I agree with SupermanEmpire. If Mel is not in it playing Max, I would prefer it be another role, as not to bastardize or rape the franchise.

But SupermanEmpire I have to disagree a wee bit with the Bond and Ryan comments. The Bond franchise was meant to have a new Bond every few years. HE's like any character, in any story, that lives on for years and years. You may as well say, "I can't stand when there is a new Robin Hood all the time". Sure they have been made by different studios throughout the years, but they are always new actors. I mean you can't have Indiana Jones's father running around nailing hot young tail at his age, could you? It's a given that the franchise needs a new actor to keep Bond young and kicking ass. I mean Connery wasn't even that old when he did, "Never Say Never Again", with Kim Basinger, but many critics panned it, because some saw Connery hooking up with Basinger as kind of creepy. Not me, mind you. I just thought, "Damn, Connery gets some hot tail even at his age", but you get the drift. So the need to slam the replacing of old Bond actors or old Ryan actors with new ones, is unfounded. It's a necessary function of the Hollywood machine. And I used to feel that way. When I heard that they were going to replace Pearce Broznan, with this new blonde guy, I thought, "What's this crap!?" I was pissed, but Daniel Craig was so kick ass, especially in the first fifteen minutes, I completely changed my mind. I do still feel (as I think many do) that Broznan had one more movie to offer the fans though. Although, riding out with Halle Berry is not too freakin' shabby!

Now I DO agree, that I feel that Mel is the only Max. Max is not Bond or Jack Ryan, and never has been. Mel was never replaced with a new actor through all of these years, so it would not be tolerated easily. So, as much of a fan of The Road Warrior called Mad Max I might be, you and I, along with the hordes of Max fans around the world, might just have to bite the bullet and accept it, if Worthington is cast as Max. I think I could learn to like him as Max, as I did with Craig as Bond.

Good interview link J.A., I liked how he talked about building consecutive production work in one area as opposed to intermittent. As to who they decide to go with will be tricky. Both Hardy and Worthington have qualities that remind me of Max, yet it's those same qualities that each is missing. I think either one could also do the villain, Hardy cause I know he can play a crazy ass motherf*cker, and Worthington cause its always interesting to see the token hero switch roles, kinda like Fonda in Once Upon A Time In The West.

This character is like Rocky or Rambo, there can be only one Mad Max and his name is Mad Mel. If they try to pull a f*cken Bond, or Jack Ryan move this film will be hated, and even worse SH*T. The only way it will be excepted is if Mel does a cameo as Max and his character passes the torch to a COMPLETELY NEW lead role.

Ok none of this is confirmed yet...

Hardy or Worthington ain't attached to this project, its only noted that the film will be shot in Australia and that the lead cast will be a local.
In which both Hardy & Worthington are Austrailian hence forth speculated that they are on top of the casting sheet...

Awesome news. I'm very happy that it's going be filmed in Australia. The forth film was originally going to be filmed in Namibia, then the Iraq war happened and they thought it would be unsafe. Also great news to have an Aussie in the Lead role of Max. This is an iconic Australian film, it would have been stupid if this film had been made any other way.

I'll watch another Mad Max film, regardless. Although, like many have stated, it will be somewhat of a downer without Mel (and I don't think a simple cameo will suffice).

Thanks Bane. I hadn't heard that. Appreciate it.

Leng T'che, Thunderdome can not even come close to being compared to The Road Warrior. Thunderdome was lost and lead Max's world into little bitch and babyland. What vehicles did they have? Some stupid train-truck at the end? "Classic", it is not. Mad Max is classic. The Road Warrior is classic. Thunderdome is a catastrophe. Here's a clue. What was Thunderdome's MPAA rating?....PG-13. What was Mad Max and The Road Warrior's ratings?.....both rated R. Thunderdome was an abomination in the Mad Max realm. Sorry, but anybody will tell you that Thunderdome was the red headed (impressionable) step-child of the series. The only thing that would make it classic, is the fact that it was made in 1985.

Funny this doesn't say anything about Mel Gibson. Even if he isn't going to be in it, they should say so, right?

I don't think Charlize Theron is a very good fit for this. Sorry but it should be Aussie actors only.

I just hope the don't rush something out of the gate, just to get the money flowing. Tina Turner- "We don't need another Thunderdome"! LOL!
